...at the supermarket? They make it fresh daily. I want to try some but don't know what is the best variety.
Answer:
Supermarket sushi is to sushi what frozen pizza is to pizza. I don't care if they make it fresh, it is rarely as good as what you would get in a good Japanese restaurant.
I love to turn people on to sushi, but if they are nervous about trying it, I suggest they go first for the cooked kinds, like shrimp (basically, steamed shrimp on a little rice cake) and California rolls, which is avocado with crabmeat (usually imitation crab) rolled together, and frequently topped with caviar (roe).
If you are ready to dive into raw fish, most people like tuna and yellow tail (a relative of tuna). As you get more adventurous, you can try more and more.
The best way to eat sushi in a restaurant is at the sushi bar. As the chef what he recommends (tell him you are new to this and he will take care of you). The general rule is whatever is freshest that day is the best tasting. Enjoy!! and good luck!!
California rolls are great. Or try the salmon or tuna.
California Rolls. Can't fail with those.
If you are a first timer on the Sushi thing, I would first get a California Roll or a Philadelphia Roll. They are really good and not too over powering. My personal favorite is Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon and Spicy White Fish.
Spicy tuna or spicy salmon rolls are delicious.
Spicy Tuna! with a crap load of wasabi and a Saporo beer to wash it down
None. The problem with supermarket sushi is that it sits already made in the cooler for hours. The rice will become hard and the overall experience will be sad.
But, if you insist, I would recommend basic nigiri sushi (rice with fish on top), not a roll. Rolls will have nori, which is especially bad if it sits in a cooler, and often have cheap inmitation crab mixed with mayo for a filling...Most times they'll have a little combo with 4-8 different pieces. Then, if you like something in particular, you can go after that specifically.
Start out with the California roll.
It's all about the unagi! It's eel, so you'd think it'd be pretty creepy, but it's DELICIOUS! Also tuna, salmon, cali roll (no fish in that one), and fugu if you can possibly get it.
Another vote for the Cali roll. Also, Philadelphia Rolls are good, too. That's smoked salmon with a dab of cream cheese and generally cucumber. The inari is good too...the rice wrapped in the shiny, brownish wrapper. It's a type of tofu. Yum! Enjoy!
Shrimp Tempora rolls rock while cucumber rolls are good when you want something simple.
Spicy tuna roll
I love sea urchin but it's not for someone who has never tried sushi before.
In regards to flavor it depends on your taste buds. sushi is not for every body. It just has to be fresh that's the key to it fresh with in hours. i love sushi but i prefer ceviche(Mexican raw shrimp in lime juice with veggies and a cold beer)
do not let any on tell you different get fresh. then go tasting
For a beginner without raw fish experience California rolls are good. I also like avacado or cucumber rolls. Raw fish are a little bit of an acquired taste, so stick with it, it rly good. And if they have eel sushi, which looks like brown cooked fish on rice is pretty good too.
The best kind of sushi depends on three facts.
1) Of which supermarket.
2) Of which company that runs the sushibar at that supermarket, and
3) In which state. (Because of the state's regulation, it can effect on sushi taste, such as temperature control, etc.)
For example, the Wagmans supermarket with sushibars run by either the store chain or by AFC Corporation is the best place to try good sushi in New York State. They have many kinds of ready-made sushi platter menu so that you can order it right away or they will let you make your customized selection.
My advice is talk to the sushi-chef of the supermarket you visit. He is the only person who can help your needs. Don't ask anybody else.
If u want 2 eat sushi dont go to the supermarket
go to Todai or others
they make it fresh and yummy too
Its just okay. To me fresh is best.
