Is it that one is Chinese and the other Japanese?

Answer:
Hey Dawn Slobbinport.
When did you get out of jail?
teriaki sauce usualy has pineapple juice and extra sugar in it, among other things.
Soy sauce is extracted from fermented soy beans.
Teriyaki sauce is a marinade MADE from soy sauce, typically including sugar, rice vinegar, sake and mirin (a sweet liquid sauce).

In japan, soy sauce is called "shoyu".
flavor wise, soy sauce is thin and salty. teriyaki is thicker-similar to syrup and sweet.
i use them all the time to marinade my meat. i use soy sauce and lemon juice, garlic and pepper.ummmmmmmm. soy sauce is real salty and teriyaki is not, i can use teriyaki by itself or as a dipping sauce ,soy you can not. but sometimes i mix both together with other spices into my chicken, steak or pork. ummmmmmmmm
teriyaki tastes better
Soy sauce, originating in China, is commonly used in East and Southeast Asian cuisine and appears in some Western cuisine dishes, especially as an ingredient in Worcestershire sauce. Then, what is teriyaki? It is a way of Japanese cooking.

Also, Soy sauce (10 calories per tablespoon) packs 920 milligrams of sodium. Teriyaki is a smarter option (1 tablespoon, 15 calories) -- though still high in sodium at about 610 milligrams, it’s not quite as high as soy sauce. So yes one of the differences is that one is Chinese and the other Japanese.Hope this helps!
The word, teriyaki is a combination of two Japanese words "teri" and "yaki." Teri means luster, and yaki means grill or broil.

Soy sauce or soya sauce is a fermented sauce made from soybeans (soya beans), roasted grain, water and salt. (from Wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/soy_sauce).... Soy sauce is present in both Chinese and Japanese cooking.

Teriyaki Sauce has soy sauce as one of it's ingredients but it's primarily used as a basting sauce. Here is a recipe for making your own teriyaki sauce:

Homemade Teriyaki Sauce

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup *mirin (sweet rice wine) (soy sauce : mirin = 1:1)
2 tbsp sugar
PREPARATION:
Pour all ingredients in a pan. Stir the mixture well. Put the pan on low heat and simmer for a couple of minutes. Remove from the heat and cool the mixture. Store the sauce in a clean bottle in the fridge.
*You can substitute mirin with sake and sugar (sake:sugar = 3:1) ** Adjust the amount of sugar, depending on your preference.

Soyasauce is more salty whereas teriyaki sauce is more sweet.
Soy sauce (US) or soya sauce is a fermented sauce made from soybeans (soya beans), roasted grain, water and salt. The sauce, originating in China, is commonly used in East and Southeast Asian cuisine and appears in some Western cuisine dishes, especially as an ingredient in Worcestershire sauce.

Teriyaki (照り焼き, テリヤキ), in the Western sense, is a Japanese cooking sauce for fish or meat. The meat is cut or sliced, then broiled or grilled in a sweet soy sauce marinade. The word teriyaki derives from the word teri, which refers to a shine or luster given by the sauce, and yaki, which refers to the cooking method (grilling or broiling). In the traditional way of cooking, the meat is either dipped in, or brushed with, the sauce multiple times before completion.

Teriyaki sauce is traditionally made by mixing and heating four ingredients: Mirin, sugar, soy sauce, and sake (or occasionally another alcohol). These may all be in equal quantities or varied by the recipe. The sauce is boiled and reduced to the desired thickness before it is used to marinate meat. The meat is then grilled or broiled. Sometimes ginger is added, and the final dish may be garnished with green onions.

Your questions are always so thought provoking and endlessly fascinating.

I wish I could think of such mentally stimulating questions!

My answer.... uh, what they said.
Firstly, there are both Chinese and Japanese soy sauces.

You use soy sauce as the base, with added Japanese specialty ingredients to make Teriyaki sauce.

Cheers
Soy sauce can be used alone but it is the base for teriyaki sauce.

Teriyaki having garlic, ginger, sugar etc... in it. There are variations of the actual sauce depending upon the cook. Some prefer a sweeter sauce and add more sugar. Some add a teaspoon of peanut butter as in Hawaii.
teriyaki sauce is sweet. soy sauce is just salty.
