    What is the difference between an Enchilada and a Burrito?

Answer:
There are many different types of enchiladas and they are popular all through the country. To name a a few of the most popular authentic Mexican enchiladas, they are corn tortillas which are either:
a) passed through some "chile ancho" (a type of chili) sauce, then fried and filled with "queso fresco" (crumbly, non-melting cheese) with or without minced onions, rolled, sprinkled with some more cheese and served with cubed, fried potatoes. This variation is probably the most popular, the sauce can also be black, red, or green mole (named "enmoladas"), bean sauce ("enfrijoladas"), or tomato sauce ("entomatadas") instead of the chile ancho or a red tortilla (made with some spices) used without any sauce.
b) the corn tortilla is fried, then filled with shredded chicken, served, smothered in hot green chile sauce, then sprinkled with cheese and baked til the cheese melts. They are served with cream ("swiss enchiladas").
c) corn tortillas filled with a special regional blend of melting cheeses, shaped into small triangles and sealed and then deep fried ("enchiladas potosinas")
d) The tex-mex enchilada which is not consumed in Mexico, it is a flour tortilla covered with "enchilada sauce" (basically tomato sauce with some spices) filled and covered in a mixture of American cheeses, broiled until the cheeses melt. Not authentic and not of my faves but good, nonetheless.

Burritos aren't generally a true Mexican food staple. The ones we do have are popular on the northwestern part of Mexico and are made with huuuuge flour tortillas (like 16 inches or so) and filled with only steak and maybe some salsa. Some people also like to add some cheese to it but it's not essential, while in echiladas, it is. It is then rolled, heated, and cut up into halves or thirds as it is large and serves more than one... or one very hungry fella! As you can see, no rice is ever, ever used, also no yellow cheese and rarely, if ever, sour cream. Burritos are actually more of a tex-mex creation.

As you can see, the difference lies in the type of tortilla used, the region where they're mostly consumed (not counting, of course, their popularity outside Mexico), the fillings (enchiladas never use beef, that would be "flautas" or "tacos", and burritos rarely use cheese), the methods used, and the sauces and spices.

An enchilada is sauced and baked.
Enchiladas have the ends open, Burritos have the ends folded over and closed.
Enchiladas don't have rice in their tortillas...they are usually filled with protein and veggies...with a serving of rice on the side....

Burritos on the other hand can be stuffed to the hilt with rice, protein and beans....making them very filling.....

I happen to love Mexican...it's so versatile....

Enchiladas are corn tortillas stuffed with meat or cheese, in a sauce. A burrito is a flour tortilla stuffed with whatever the maker wants in it. The difference is in the tortilla and the cooking.
And enchilada is made with a soft fried corn tortilla, filled with beef, chicken, cheese, seafood and covered with chile and cheese.

A burrito is made with a flour tortilla much the same way. Burritos can also be made without smothering them so they can be hand-held (like a breakfast burrito).
Enchiladas are cooked in sauce.
Burritos are usually deep-fried.
Enchiladas are made from corn tortillas that are "bathed" in a red (sometimes green) chili sauce then stuffed with meat or cheese or both and rolled.

Burritos are made from flour tortillas and stuffed with anything you can imagine, and then rolled.

Tacos are made from corn tortillas. They are simply folded in half or rolled thinly.

Deep fried burritos are called chimichangas.
First of all, let's set the record straight... You will not find burritos on the menu in Mexico (except maybe the border regions or tourist areas). When you go to an authentic Mexican restaurant, they may provide you with a plate of some meat and veggies to put in tortillas, and the act of rolling it up to eat it would be called making a 'burro', but you don't actually find it on a menu as a specific item.

Enchiladas are indeed Mexican, and they are tortillas stuffed with meat and other things, and then sauce (and sometimes cheese) is poured over them. My favorite enchiladas are 'enchiladas suizas', which are chicken enchiladas with green salsa, cheese and creme poured over them.

Don't get me wrong. I love burritos, which in the US are what you called wraps made with tortillas and stuffed with Mexican-style meats (or taco meat), veggies, beans and salsa. I eat them a lot, but they aren't really Mexican. They are Tex-Mex.
