Answer:
Yams are not sweet- they are bitter. Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet & orange. However, some people call yams sweet potatoes, BUT technically the only sweet potatoe "yams" come from Louisiana.
I think the only difference is that yams come in a can and sweet potatoes come fresh?
ive always thought they were the same lol
Obviously the color, Yam is Purple and Sweet patatoes are Golden Yellow.

I just bought some today and on the receipt it reads, "yam/sweet potato". According to Wikipedia, "In the United States, sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) are often referred to as "yams". Sweet potatoes labeled (incorrectly, according to some) as "yams" are widely available in U.S. grocery stores. True yams are mostly only found in specialty markets such as those that serve Asian or Caribbean communities."
Most so-called yams that you buy in stores are actually sweet potatoes. You'll most likely be buying sweet potato if you live in North America (which most people incorrectly call yams). The easiest way to tell is by its colour: sweet potatoes are orange in colour, and yams are white. Yams are also very starchy, and they have a sticky and slimy consistency when mashed up raw (pretty disgusting looking!).
SWEET POTATOES ARE SWEET AND YAMS ARE BLAND AND STARCHY THEY ARE NOT RELATED IN ANY WAY
i think they're the same.
