I was told by someone I used to work with that England's food isn't too great. Is that true? I'm used to good food, b/c I live in New Orleans. What kind of cuisine can I expect over there?

Answer:
London as one of the most cosmopolitan cities on Earth is filled with all manner of excellent international restaurants of very high caliber! It is home to excellent Chinese, Italian, Arabic, European cuisines of all types everything from quick take-out to gourmet dining. But the true specialty of London must rest in the variety and quality of its "curry houses!"

Some even claim that London, England and Vancouver, Canada can now boast simply the finest Indian fare outside of the sub-continent!

For sure you MUST try the wonderful English fish and chips, fish coated with fresh lemon and the chips smothered in cider vinegar. But to enjoy London properly is also to enjoy a flaming hot Vindaloo, a Rogan Josh, Muglai style or a Tandoori roasted Chicken!
oh dear......well i live in the states now, but im from england. i love the food here!!!
over there you can expect things like shepards pie which is beef in gravy with mashed potatoes on top, bangers and mash,(sausages and mash) toad in the hole( sausages cooked in savoury pancake bater) lots of different meats with vegies and gravy on a sunday. lots of hot sponge puddings with custard.
you know its not too bad, but you're used to some good cooking. so just in case, fill your suitcase with provisions!
The same you can get across the pond.

We ain't on a different planet you know.
In addition to the normal bangers, mash, shepherds pie, fish, chips, whateve, they have excellent Indian food!

If you are planning on eating out a lot then you can expect very diverse food from all over the world. In fact, the only place that can compete with London in terms of world cuisine is New York. Some areas of London have different cultural mixes so it really depends on where you will be staying.

As for home cooking, well some of our native dishes are excellent. Anything made with care and good ingredients should be enjoyable for you. We have some of the best quality meat and fish in the world. If you want to see some amazing produce then visit Borough Market.
There's wicked good Indian food, and some English chefs and restauranteurs have some great reputations. If you're into foodie stuff you can find it.
Bangers and mash!

sheapards pie

steak?

Lobster?
incredible indian food.
Try going to the East End for a specialty, Pie and Mash with Parsley sauce, and if your daring, the Jellied Eels are a treat, like oysters in New Orleans, and not to much different in taste.

Also if you can finish it, a traditional English Breaky, of eggs, bacon (not the American kind), sausages, black pudding, mushrooms, fried tomato and baked beans, and don't forget the toast, with a nice cuppa tea, it is a meal most Americans find hard to finish.

I am a former chef and have travelled to Britian from Canada a number of times, it is as stated a culinary carousel in London, you will never find it dull or uninteresting for sure.
England's food might be a bit boring, but Chinese food in London is a must to try. Some of them are really good, some even better than in China.Hard to believe but it's true.
