I am looking for a moong dal kicherie recipe that I can make without using a pressure cooker.
Answer:
Moong dal khichdi (Moogachya dalichi khichdi)
Serves 4-5 people
Ingredients
1 cup rice (basmati)
1/4 cup green gram, split (moong dal)
2 cups water
any vegetables (peas, brinjals, potatoes, carrots, onions and peanuts etc - optional)
2 teaspoon Maharashtrian black masala (kala or goda)
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1 teaspoon cumin powder
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
salt to taste
1 teaspoon sugar or jaggery
chopped cilantro leaves and freshly grated coconut for garnishing
Method
1. Mix rice and split green gram, wash and drain. Keep aside for 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile heat a pan.
2. Add oil. When it is hot, add mustard seeds and let them pop. Add asafoetida and turmeric powder. Add the vegetables and fry until tender.
3. Add the rice and dal mixture and fry.
4. Heat water until it starts boling. Pour it into the rice and dal mixture.
5. Allow the mixture to boil. Then simmer and add black masala, coriander-cumin powder, salt, chili powder and sugar to it. Cover and cook till done.
7. Garnish with coconut and cilantro leaves. Top with ghee and serve hot with pickle and tomato-onion salad or tomato saar.
Use the same recipe you would if you were cooking in a pressure cooker. The only difference is that it will take longer to cook when it is not in a pressure cooker.
I make mine pretty plain. Like this:
1/2 cup basmati
1/2 cup split moong dal
1/2 tsp haldi (turmeric)
1/2 tsp mirchi pwd (red chili pwd)
1 tsp namak (salt)
2 tsp ghee
Rinse the dal and basmati together until the water is clear, and soak for 30 mins. Rinse that water and add 2 1/4 cup water. Bring to a boil, and remove all the foam that rises to the top. Let the water boil down to the level of the dal/chawal, and then turn the heat on the lowest setting add your spices and stir, and cover then cover with a very tight fitting lid for 15 mins. After 15 mins, turn off the heat, dont disturb the lid, and continue to let it sit for an additional 10 mins. Now your kicherie is done.
