Answer:
Hi Orange...

the British Medical Council have recently issued a statement saying that almost 50% of British schoolchildren are classified as 'obese' and many, many british (me included) are the same.

Perhaps the difference is in perception? We see (on TV and chat shows) American people as grossly overweight (look on Oprah, Ricky Lake etc. etc.) and some truly are humungous, so we English, collectively, tend to think of Americans as little more than burger and hot dog eating machines.

It IS true that portion size in the USA is vast, compared with restaurant portions in England. Perhaps it is looking at those individuals in the USA that are grossly overweight makes you think that we are thin.

Oh I wish I were!

There is and has been for several years now, a concerted attempt to encourage people in the UK to cut out fats and sugars from their diet and this IS having some effect.

But look around you, where you live, and I'm sure you'll see many people of both sexes who are fit, healthy and far from overweight...perhaps you're just looking at the (slightly more noticeable, admittedly) fatter people?

Some of the traditional 'stodgy' English foods have gone by the way...suet puddings are rarely seen these days for example, fish and chips are still popular, though often advertised as 'low fat' to encourage people to buy ('low fat' when they are deep fried?)

Anyway, to answer your question, I really don't think we are as thin as you think, so don't give up hope!

Cheers,

BobSpain
because fat is good for you.
who the heck said Brit's are thin....
Well I live in england and I would say that we have all variations of body shape and size just as the americans do!
We have people who are fat and binge on fast food and rubbish and also those who eat more healthily and keep their bodies trim!
Its just toomuch of a generalisation you know! LOL
It's all about portion size.
cuz just like in france, they walk everywhere,.
Beacuse fat people are taken out to the stone circles and executed as part of seasonal druid rituals, after chasing them around in the wheat fields, then, the next day another crop circle is reported.....
I've never been to England but I would say cause they probably because they exersise and americans just sit on their lazy butts and watch TV!!
Most people in England are NOT thin. I used to live there and knew quite a few chubby people. England is the second-fattest nation on the planet (#1 is the US).
Because they are mentally and physically fit. They exercise regularly and eat F-A-T-T-Y foods.
They are not as slim anymore. Unfortunately, England, and the rest of Europe, are catching up with America when it comes to obesity.
They used to be slimmer because they walked a lot more (4 short 15-min walks add up to an hour of cardio). Also, fast food didn't use to be as easily available as it was in the US. Now you can get it anywhere. They are still slimmer than Americans, because their portions are smaller, but the gap is narrowing.
Most of the developed world, and even some rapidly developed nations like China and India are moving towards obesity.
High fat foods do not make people fat, carbohydrates and lack of exercise do. Fats block your arteries, causing heart disease, and the Scottish have the highest rates of heart disease in the whole world! Well done!
