Most cultures regard Friday as a day to eat fish. I think it's biblical.

it's not specifically African Americans, but years ago most Catholics and their religious derivatives did NOT eat meat on Friday. so fish was a good alternative. Now still in most public schools. meat is not served for lunch on friday,that's why it's pizza day.
Because that's when all the food joints serve it,I usually eat fish on Fri. when I'm out and about.All the American Legion, little pubs,and most restaurant's serve it.
The same reason white people or Latino people do. Because it taste good.

It's a down home fish fry. An old southern good time. However, it's not only African Americans that eat fish on Fridays. Catholics all around the world do it as well. The Moby Dick near my house is packed every Friday night, whether it's Lent or not.
