Answer:
As far as I know, people "up north" know alot about Southern Foods, I know alot of people who cook foods like that in my area (Oakland County), and up north even further. They usually only cook it on certain family occasions though, which is why it may seem that they do not know alot about it. They may have lost parts of their culture in transit, while mixing in with new areas.
Alot of Southerners ended up migrating to South Michigan over the years and brought their food culture with them. When Detroit started booming, alot of people didn't like living in the industrial area of Detroit, and moved up around Oakland County (which was considered "up north" back in the day). When Oakland County became expensive, they moved up even further, to what is now "up north."
certain foods are cooked in certain areas and southern chicken fried steak is something that you usually only find once you have passed washington DC. its a regional thing
I live of north and I have heard of it even fix it on occasion
i live up "North" and we dont know about stuff like that cuz how can a steak be chicken? jeez lol
Plenty of places serve it in Michigan. I love it. Big Boy has it in all their restaurants also.
cause they have a busier life style
& no time to watch the food network !!!
LOL :)
As someone who has lived in the South and the North, I would say Northerners know about Chicken Fried Steak...people eat it and some places serve it, just not as much as in the South....same as okra, grits, etc.
I will bread a pork chop, I will bread a piece of chicken, but I refuse to bread a beef steak. Pork and chicken are mild flavours that take on other flavours very well. Beef already is flavourfull and to mask it (other than a few seasonings) would ruin it. It is not popular in the north because of this, and that is why they don't know about it.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and have eaten C.F.S. many times...even in a Chinese restaurant!
I grew up in New York and we call your chicken fried steak cubed steak. I grew up on it. My mom breaded it and fried it, so do I. When I came to live in Florida 7 years ago, my friend said she had chicken fried steak for dinner. I asked her what that was and I told her that in New York we call it cubed steak. So the southerners call it one thing and up North we call it another thing. Same exact thing.Breaded fried cubed steak........All of the supermarkets and butchers sell it, very common like buying a chicken.
i LOVE chicken fried steak. i eat it all the time up north
Chicken fried steak may have originated in the South but it is considered a staple comfort food by many restaurants "up north" and across the country.
I've never been to the South and I've eaten it quite often. There are very few foods, if any, from that area that the rest of the country is not familiar with.
They are not from down south and with the present trend of healthy eating. it is a gard sell to get people to eat a fatty cut of beef that has been fried
Because up NORTH they can afford to buy Steak or Fried chicken and don't have to mask one as the other.
Hey, I live so far "up North" I'm in another country and not only do I know about chicken fried steak, I've actually made it!
In the words that you would understand " we aint country" we don't fry everything we eat and make up crap like "chicken fried Steak " what the hell is that???
