Answers:
You really should tell your wife..she loves you and will be concerned for you. I'm sure she will be very supportive. You have nothing to be ashamed of as pain med is addictive.

I know what servere chronic pain feels due to a work place injury like but I didn't want to become hooked on pain meds.

I went to the library and borrowed books on pain management, one was by a pain sufferer and another was by two doctors..the best thing I ever did as it really teaches you about all the different types of pain..how addictive pain meds are and also coping strategies. I really suggest you get some books on it.

Unfortunately because you are hooked..you really need to tell your wife and both go to the doctor together and get some counselling to help wean yourself off them. You can't do this alone, you need support and your wife and your doctor won't judge you. It's very hard not to become dependent on them when no one has taught you how to deal with pain in the first place.

This is a very common problem and nothing at all to be ashamed of. Please remember this. Good on you for wanting to go off them and get yourself better.

i think it'll be ok if you tell your wife...you could even just tell her and keep it between the two of you, she can help you out.
i'm sorry this has happened, good luck!
go to narcotics anonymous. you have to tell your loved ones you have a problem so they can help you.
People have different personalities and levels of addiction.
That being said, yes...it's very rare to see people that can just walk away from most drugs (alcohol, nicotene, painkillers, heroin, ice cream) and be ok with it mentally. Out of even those few lucky people I've never heard of anyone who was able to escape the *physical* side-effects of addiction...so yeah, like you said...best bet is to just stay away totally.
Many, many, many people are totally addicted to all sorts of pain meds. I'm in AA and I hear it all the time. Only you can decide if you want to quit, but tell your Dr. and wife to start. Seek help too from NA, AA, or a treatment center before it kills you and/or ruins your life.
Tell your doctor, most doctors will prescribe something that will give you the desired effect but will take you time to become addicted. I take narcotic pain meds prescribed..I have for years now. They always warn me about becoming addicted. If it ever came to that point, my doctor would put me on something else for awhile to gradually help me before putting me back on. I guess it depends on if you have one (doctor) that you can trust. Getting them from others is bad.they overcharge for one, and you dont really know what you are getting as far as dosage unless you actually see their prescription.
you need to be honest with your wife, she can support you through the rough spells.
hope you get through this dear.
lots of luck
