so i went to this nice japanese place and i figured out i have no idea how to eat one. it seems to large to use chopsticks but picking food up with your hands just seems rude. what do i do?

It's finger food. But eat it from the top, not the bottom, stuff will fall out and that's messy. If fingerfood is not your thing, have it handrolled.
