not even a salsa. it is chopped tomatoes, onion, hot peppers, cilantro, some salt and lime juice..

Both answers are right. "Pico de gallo" is usually the kind of salsa (chunk of tomatos, onions and pepper, etc) that is used for tacos and molletes.
If that is not the case (that it goes with something else), then they refer to the mixture of fruits (maybe jicama, mango, pineapple, cucumber...) with lime juice and powder pepper.

pico de gallo is almost the american equivalent of relish because salsa is the spanish word for sauce

a good easy salsa is

28 can of tomatos (cheapest you can get)
1/4 onion
2 garlic
1 jalepeno
some cilantro (optional to taste)
salt
When you are in Texas and you order Pico de Gallo you get a sauce made with diced onions, tomatoes, jalapenos and cilantro. If you are south of the border, you will get a tossed fruit salad made with Jicama, Mango , Orange, cucumber that has lime squeezed, salt and powder “chile”.
Its an awesome condiment like Salsa, but more intense.
