I agree with the smoked salmon. This should be served with oatcakes.
As an alternative choice I also serve melted blue cheese with carrot baton crudites.
try cheese balls, we always have a couple, and a layered taco dip with chips. That way it is something to munch>OCTOBER!!!!!!!!...
Raw veggies & dip, cheese platter with assorted cheeses & mustards, cheese ball, sausage balls, etc. The key is to keep it finger foods so people can just grab a bite while they're waiting on the good stuff!!

why not have a large serving plate with a dip in the centre in a little dish, with things to dip placed around, such as carrots, celery, olives,cucumber, pepper. Keep it nice and light, maybe some nuts and dried fruit?
