Answer:
Forget books! Probably never wants to see another book again!
Potted mums. That way they can be replanted in a garden!
In fact, why not plan the whole party with a "Secret Garden" theme? One of the nicest books in literature, and that way you can have all sorts of potted flowers as table decorations!
Antique Books stacked sideways
Well you could get a bunch of minature books(like kiddo books) and glue them together in stacks. you could place them around a pillar candle in glass, or a shorter vase of her favorite flowers. You could put them around a stack of Apples with little fake bookworms coming out of them.
Use flowers! An old lady loves flowers! Just go to a local florist and ask them what is most popular! =]
I would find out what her favorite book is. Or favorite author. Or you could use book titles that say something like "congratulations" "good luck" "thank you" and etc. Use that as the center. Place one book in the center of each table (if it is big enough, in which I'm sure it is), then place candles around it or apples around it. Make sure you have some kind of flowers too. They don't have to go in the center of the table, but maybe on the ends of the serving/buffet table or at the ends of the room. I'm sure he/she will enjoy anything! Have fun!
