I am looking for ways to make simple/easy/instant food taste better and more like homemade. It can be any type of meal or food.
Answer:
While I prefer homemade, when I am in a hurry, I will dice up a few ripe tomatoes and chop up some black olives to add to jarred spaghetti sauce. And TOTALLY unrelated...I hate Coolwhip. But in a pinch, you can mix it with a teaspoon of powdered sugar and a cup of sour cream for a dessert topping. Use it on instant pudding, or a dollop over frozen pound cake and fresh berries. I also make 'my own' chicken and dumpling soup by making the soup as directed, then mixing one egg, about 1/2 cup flour, and a 1/2 tsp. baking soda. Just plop little 1/2 tsp. dollops of the dumpling mix into boiling soup and let simmer until cooked through. Honestly, no one knows it's Lipton!! You can add lemon, basil, and garlic to ready made mayonnaise for your own aoli sauce. I serve this on ready made fish sticks that have been baked with a smear of butter on top and sprinkled with parsley flakes. My nephew loves them!! Another thing I have done that turns out great, is to substitute 1/4 cup red wine for the water when making canned mushroom soup. Toast slices of french bread with butter and garlic salt and serve one slice on top of each bowl of soup. (Really, you can add the toasted bread on top of any canned soup and it makes it look spectacular!! Add shaved parmeson cheese on top of that when serving canned minestroni!!)
Make spices your friend.
that chick on the food network sandra lee has good recipes for that on www.foodnetwork.com!
Add chopped fresh herbs and diced fresh vegetables into everything. On every salad have a few croutons, candied nuts and shred the carrots to make them pretty. Add chopped tomatoes, black olives, a few capers and crushed red peppers to jarred spaghetti sauce. At the last moment before serving, sprinkle with fresh basil, parsley or oregano.
Quick Tortellini Soup
2 cans Contadina Stewed Tomatoes with italian seasoning
1 can of beef broth
1 large yellow onion
1/2 cabbage
1/2 bag of Barilla Three Cheese Tortellini
Saute onion and cabbage till wilted in a tablespoon of oil then add the cans of stewed tomatoes and the beef broth. fill one of the empty cans with water and add to the mixture. let simmer for about 30-45 minutes on medium heat. then add the tortellini. cook until the torellini is al dente. ...u can serve it with garlic bread (aka pillsbury french bread--make shallow cuts about an inch apart, smear margarine mixed with garlic powder and parsley. bake according to the directions and you are good to go!)
A really good resource would be a book series, I believe, called back of the box gourmet, or something similar. But here are some ideas of my own.
Pastas- pastas from a box are really like instant, especially with all of the jars of sauces available these days. Try whipping up some angel hair pasta, topped with some tomato sauce, fresh basil, and lots of parmesan cheese. Yum. The fresh basil adds a special homemade touch. Another good one is mac and cheese. Try the spiral kind, and add in some extra real cheese, and once it has melted and been mixed, add in a little sour cream. Yum. Experiment around with different kinds of pastas, and just by adding in your own special blend of spices, it can make it your own.
Soups- Take canned soups and spice them up. The chunky ready to serve (non condensed) kind are the best to work with. For example, buy a couple cans of chunky chicken noodle. And then add in your own additions, such as extra carrots, celery, and onion. Sprinkle with some parsley and serve. Please note that some extra broth may be required in order to cook the extra ingredients. Use chicken stalk to cook them, and then add everything to the heated soup. Or if you like less broth, cook the extras in water, drain, and then add to the can of heated soup.
Chili- You can also buy cans of chili, and make them your own, once again, by adding some spices like chili powder, red pepper, and paprika, some ground beef and sauteed onion. Let simmer for a while, the longer, the better flavor. Then serve with green onion and sour cream. Cheese is also good.
Stews- Canned beef stew can be done like the chili. Add in some of your owns seasonings and extras, like more potato, carrots, peas, etc.
Biscuits- This, to me, appears to be a very versatile instant option. Canned biscuits. They come in various varieties, country style is good to work with. Try some of these with canned beef stew over them, topped with freshly grated black pepper. Or try them with cooked chicken, removed from the bone (you can get an already cooked rotisserie chicken from the deli), with butter and honey. So good. As a breakfast option, try frying up some breakfast sausage, pouring in a can of creamy mushroom soup, and letting it heat thoroughly. You now have a breakfast gravy to serve over biscuits.
Ham- You know those hams that are already cooked, and all you do is slice? Well, slice it, moisten it with a little water or melted butter, and rub it with brown sugar. Then bake or fry. It adds a great flavor.
Rice- get some flavored rice-a-roni style instant rice. Add in a little seasoning of choice, and some cooked meat. I would recommend getting chicken fried rice as the flavor, and then adding in some bits of fried chicken.
Instant potatoes- Make them with milk and butter, mix really well. Then add in some cream cheese and sour cream (not too much, though, you don't want it to be runny). Mix. Top with pepper and fresh parsley.
As always, experiment. Find a boxed or canned food, and ask yourself what you think would go well with it that you can add in. Find what you like and what works for you.
Have fun!
