A little more information could have helped but lets see what I can do to help - if I can - (smiles)
WalMart sells some cake decorating items... you will find the cake frosting coloring in the crafts section of the store. You can even find navy blue and black not to mention all the rainbow colors and such that are available...
We used to use good ol fashion food coloring... still can do a great job if you like to mix your own colors as you only get the basic colors.
For cake itsself you can get flavorings and by using the food coloring you can make a white cake mix bright orange or cherry pink ...

What about a jello cake? you could poke holes in a white cake and pour different kinds of jello in each hole....check out this link...

I always love vienna cream icing for a coloruful cake. It looks so fluffy and tastes yum!! Bad english but it really does.
Lots of sparkles or sprinkles may do the trick.
