We are having a surprise b-day party w/ a luau theme. Does anyone have any fun, cheap ideas about how to set the tables, decor, food/drinks, attire, etc? Is it best to do hold it toward evening? I have a few ideas; but I would love to know if anyone has thrown one or attended one before. Thanks!
Answer:
Buy your table wares from the Dollar Tree
OR you can buy some cheap twin size sheets at walmart
Tie Dye them for that colorful look...
You could purchase some polymer Crystals from ebay and place food coloring in them for festive looking results as far as center pieces goes.
Have Fun

They have really cute stuff that is really CHEAP! They have party decor and favors for all kinds of theme parties...I've seen lots of luau stuff in their catalog, so I'm sure you can find some stuff there!
OOH sounds like fun. Of course it should be an Aloha Wear only :-) Don't forget the leis which by the way would be a nice thank you ( Mahalo) gift for your guest. Depending on how far you wanna go on this, I have many ideas lol Also depending on if the items such as kalua pig is available in your area..if not..you can make oven Kalua pig using pork butt or pork roast w/smoke flavored sauce. A great non alcoholic drink.pineapple and fruit punch mixed with ice :-) Oh my god, I'm so excited with this questions, I'm jumping around lol Kalua pig and cabbage, lau laus...you can make your own but do it way ahead of time, chicken long rice..real easy to make, beef or squid luau, lomi salmon..again easy to make, sweet potato baked, raw fish.poki mmmm , haupia. Decorate table with ti leaf if you have any..sprinkle some flowers on them. Place a cut pineapple on the table. Cover tables with plain brown paper like the ones used to mail out packages.then decorate. Saves on cleaning...just wrap up everything and throw away. For games you can play 3 legged race or musical chairs...no ones ever too old to play musical chairs lol Hard to really make any suggestions on games without knowing the persons age but that's OK :-) Need anymore suggestions or help, give me a buzz. Most of all.Have fun and "Haouli La Hanau" Happy Birthday!! To the birthday person :-) Have fun!!
Inexpensive decorations.
For centerpieces, buy a bag of play sand and fill metal trays or platters with sand and sprinkle a few sea shells here and there. Place votive candles in the middle and there you go!
Take brown craft paper and cut it to look like grass skirting. Use that to skirt your buffet table. You can also use green garbage bags the same way. (The kind with draw strings make great grass skirts for your guests!)
Buy some tiki torches at a discount store. They're cheap and they really add to the ambiance. Hang twinkle lights around, too.
Go to garage sales and pick up tropical items - you can almost always find sea shells and that kind of thing.
Buy banana palm fronds from a local florist and use them on your buffet.
I once saw a palm tree made of pineapples on the Internet. It was part of a fruit display. The trunks were made of pineapples stacked one on top of the other with palm fronds or fern leaves on the top. Very cute and it didn't look very hard.
Good luck with your party! Enjoy!
we are throwing one for my aunt and my mom is getting all of her stuff from the card and factory outlet and they have a variety of things for a luau and its not all that expensive and the food you can get someone to cater or someone you know who knows how to cook or go to a Sam's club or a walmart
try the 99 cent store. they usually have festive seasonal party items, papergoods and decorations
WHAT IS A LUAU THEME.?
I discovered that the local dollar type store really gives a lot of space to parties. It seems that luau party themes are very popular. I would suggest that as a place to start, it makes throwing a party a reasonable venture. Have fun. It is easy to get caught up in the planning and then be exhausted for the actual party.
Did a indoor sit down luau theme for a group of 75.
Red velvet sheet cake with a molded cake shape on top (flower, surf board, etc.) Cream cheese icing--All one color --Sand sculpture
Used new washed small children's sand toys on board around and decorating cake. bucket, sifter, diggers, ceramic shells, tiny child's flip flops
Refrigerate until ready to serve, roll out on cart small colored glass candles make a nice addition for presentation on table setting
Kabobs with strawberries and cantaloupe marinated in 5 alive juice 4 hours, refrigerate, remove just before placing on serving table
veggies and dip--Italian marinated celery sticks, cauliflower, broccoli, carrot sticks, zucchini, bell peppers in small colorful containers
Small ham cubes, pineapple cubes, cheese cubes--use those frilly or colored toothpicks
Barbecue, red slaw, potato salad, baked beans, rolls, chips
Tea, water, lemonade
Could substitute spiral ham or add chicken wings. If it is covered dish could assign different dishes to different people attending.
Blue (or white) table cloths or even mix. Colored glasses with candles in them. Seashells on tables.
We stuck to white styrofoam cups and plates because it was cheaper.Plastic forks. Eating tables had white table cloths and the Food tables had color. (Bought cheap sheets, cut them and hemmed them.
Added color in other ways to banquet tables. Only the Dessert and appetizer tables were fully decorated aside from centerpieces on eating tables.
I decorated conch shells, Did Barbie type dolls, (legs bent) in hula outfits, Made Palm trees for tables, exotic flower arrangements. Basically did table decorations in 3's. No more than 3 alike. Of course you can keep the decorations for the buffet tables only.
Use tin cans, wrap burlap around them add greenery of choice or add candles. Could spray paint or not; fill with water, freeze, punch holes around the top 2/3's. Thaw; add candle.
The decorations became door prizes that went home with the attending members.
Depending on number attending set up at least 4 stations.
If alcohol is involved and children are attending; set up an additional beverage station that is your bar.
Drinks
Appetizers
Main food
Dessert
Each station should have enough space around it that people are not crowding each other. Music...background ocean sounds
(I bought a cd) Limbo, hula, hula hoops, blow up beach balls,
tiki torches, bought decorations, make your own totem pole.
Suggest everyone wear "loud" colorful shirts and blouses. Chunky
jewelry or lei's, flowers for hair.
