Invite your relatives and/or her friends and ask them not to say anything to her that might take the surprise out of the whole thing.
Slide show.... get lots of old pictures... make a slideshow on Microsoft PowerPoint! She would love it and so would everyone else! Try to get pics of her as a baby, start when she was young, to when she got married, got pregnant, etc.... have a blast!
Love the slide show idea! You can also have a sit down dinner - elegant!! Gold & Crystal. (Gold for the 50th)
For my 50th, my girlfriend set up a game: Which is older, Tim or ?
She found things like Tang and Frosted Flakes and other foods, but you could do businesses or other people or things.
Put the answers on a board... she used old pictures of me or of the food and covered the answer with a post it note. Then gave each party goer a question to read. When everyone had guessed, she pulled off the sticker to show the right answer. If you want, you can keep score and have prizes.
The slide show is a really good idea. For gifts, ask everyone to bring 50 of something .. 50 pennies, 50 pins, 50 needles, 50 daisies, 50 ... you get the idea.
Since you mom was born in the late '50's, how about a 1950's theme. Ask everyone to dress in that style. Play 50's rock 'n' roll. Pull as much from that era as you can.
Have everyone who is coming to the party, write a favorite memory about your mom or a short letter telling her how special she is to them and what they appreciate about her and bind these all in a book later.
What about a masquerade surprise party?? I actually make masks for a living, and it is becoming an increasingly popular choice for the big birthdays!

-Come as "Lucy" party (or whatever your Mom's name is). Everyone comes dressed as your mom and gives speeches about "their" friends and family.
-This is your life- just like the game show
-You'll have to include a questionaire with the invitation- and then use the information from the guests to create the show.
Memory Lane- I like the idea above about the slide show...You could really go crazy and get some of those screens and create a "lane" of photos. Decorate the floor with a paper path of stones or that plastic grass, get some fake tree and flowers, etc. Really make a country lane to walk down. Add a tricycle for fun...Let er rip.

For my mom's 50th, we did a pig roast with a luau theme and lined the driveway with tiki torches and had leis for everyone when they came and even did the limbo later in the night - everyone loved it and the food was awesome - we had someone do the pig and we did everything else.
play the game that you have so many words people can't say like (fifty, your moms name and stuff that has to do with your mom turning fifty) and give everyone a pin, if someone says one of the words the person who catches them gets their pin, the person with the most pins at the end wins
