Answer:
There's nothing inappropriate about Bailey's or Frangelico as after dinner drinks; that's precisely when they're best served.
Other options in that same vein -- which is to say, alcoholic replacements for dessert -- include:
**Dessert wines**
Icewine (eiswein, if you're in the German aisle) -- the Canadians do make some excellent ones
Beerenauslese
Muscat
Port
Madeira
Sherry
Sauternes
Tokaji
**Sweet liqueurs**
Amarula
Amaretto
Chambord
Kahlua
Godiva, etc.
At the other end of the spectrum are the digestifs:
Calvados
Cognac
Armagnac
Whisky (Scotch, bourbon, etc.)
What about a nice sweet dessert wine?
Try a limoncello. It's lemon vodka that's sweetened. You can make it yourself. I got it off the show Everyday Italian from the food network.
maybe a good port, served with Stilton and pears. Just my opinion, of course.
Peppermint Schnapps:)
The ice wines made from frozen grapes are perfect as after dinner dessert wines. There is a wide Canadian selection that have won top honours around the world.
Dessert wines are best. Pinot Grigio is my favorite. Santa Margarita is nice Pinot Grigio at a good price point.
I think nearly anything is better than Bailey's, but that's just me.
You could try grappa or eau-de-vie. These are respectively the Italian and the French versions of more or less the same thing, a clear distilled spirit made from fruit skins and pits (usually grape). You serve it in shot glasses. It's strong stuff (around 80 proof) but I think really delicious. They go very well with coffee.
Drambuie- http://www.queenannewine.com/dramcorandl...
Chambord- http://www.chambordonline.com/mainflash....
For your guests who are not driving that evening, brandy or Cognac are good choices.
Also, Drambuie is lovely.
Icewine, port or warm brandy.
Chilled Champagne w/ a little Raspbery Liquer, Chambord, or a sweet Riesling. Gran Marnier & Cognac warmed in a double boiler & coffee, or just Gran Marnier by itself w/ a lemon twist, or Cognac by itself, Remy Martin, Hennessey, Tuaca is also a good liquer, these sweet liquers are good served w/ coffee, Amaretto di Saronno is another one, those are the ones that come to mind I'm sure they're more, but those are the most popular.
