Actually, commercial caterers plan around 10 sq. foot per head for cocktail parties which serves the average need. Just remeber, cocktail receptions are stand up and not every one will be there at the same time.
As for dinners, it highly depends on the table arrangements. In general, round tables takes much more floor space than long tables for the same number of pax. A 100 sq.ft. space will accomadate a 6' round which seats 10-12. But the same amount of space with long tables can seat 14-16. Just do your math accordingly.
It all depends on the comfort level with personal space.
I would say a personal space of 25 sq.ft. is comfortable enough.
Multiply that by the no. of persons invited and you have the area required. Ex. 50 persons x 25 = 1250 sq ft.
