What has "Dutch" got to do with spliting the cost of a meal?
Does "Dutch" refers to the people of Holland? If yes..it's racist.
Hopefully not. Still I don't know nor understand the origin of this
slang. Please help this stupid man.
Answer:
I'm sorry to say (and yes, I'm Dutch) but it seems that people from other countries think we all try to keep our money in the pocket.
(Maybe 'course great companies like Heineken, Unilever, Royal Dutch Shell and AH are all Dutch: if you want to earn a lot of money you must sit on it ;) )
All ready learning about "the Dutch treat" when in English class.
And yes: it means "split the bill and each pay it's own part".
Greetz from a Dutchy who never goes Dutch :)
(And not a stupid question just a stupid saying)
.
each person pays their own way..It has nothing to do with race or the Dutch people
Don't worry about it, it's an ages old saying. I'd be worried about going out on the date and getting ready for someone who wants to split the bill. That's nice in this day and age, don't you think???
Have a good date, and be nice.
It seems & this is purely hear-say... that the Dutch are extremely stingy when it comes to spending so I guess that's where the term originates *sorry*
Basically, it means that you split the tab between each other when dining out together.
Means each person pays for their own meal.
it means that he pays his way... and she pays her way..
It is Dutch in origin and means that you pay for your own expenses. You have to realize that not everybody can fork over a large sum for food, drinks and entertainment so if you can go Dutch you can enjoy yourself and each other's company and only pay 50%.
It means each person pays for his/her own meal; I think it started in the 30's; I don't consider it a racist term, though....
its means when you go out on a date and you pay for your own meal. DUH
it means pay fer yer own dude !!!!
To pay one's own expenses on a date or outing.
u know wat it means yet u still ask... sigh
it mean paying for your own meals
