I'm looking for some great decorating ideas for a ballroom for a Mount Olympus Theme Party/Charity Dinner event. Any ideas??
Answer:
Mount Olympus is obviously Greek. So you'll want to incorporate anything and everything Greek (present day and past).
First of all, is it a black tie event? If so then you'll be limited and have to be reserved.
But if it isn't, then you may want to take a pointer from (ugghh) MTV's Sweet 16 show. See if you can find gentlemen and ladies to dress up as Greek gods and goddesses. Togas would be necessary with grape leave vines intertwined to create a halo. Some of your typical gods and goddesses would be Zeus, Posideon, Athena, Pandora, Medusa, etc.
Next, try your best to recreate the Parthenon. Find some free standing columns to decorate the ballroom. If you have the money to do so, see if the columns come in almost as a portion of a wall. From there, why don't you take cloth/sheets and drape it up to the ceiling. Just some thoughts.
For some good Greek food, you'll want to have mousaka, grape leaves, ouzo (a very potent vodka/liquor). Perhaps find a recipe to make a "love potion".
See if you can have the colors as a bright blue. It represents Santorini where you often see the domed buildings with roofs in this pristine blue.
When in doubt, always look to a party planner to help you get ideas. I just went to Greece this summer. I loved the country immensely!
A pastel mountain theme that looks ethereal. Also it would have to be a toga party. Everybody gets a gold looking partial wreath for their head as they come in the door.
You could have filmy white fabric join the middle of the room and then have a disco ball there. Keep the lights low so that the light reflects off the fabric.
Serve Greek Food.
Roman columns, smoke, fountains and volcanoes
You can make a "Pavillion" out of carpet roll tubes (you can get these free from a flooring place). Attach them to a board for support (or fill the bottom with plaster of paris for weight). Paint them white. Twine fake ivy, grape vines and grapes around the columns. Place four of these behind your main table with swags of white sheer fabric connecting them and draped around them, or group them in a square or round pattern. Inside of the "Pavillion" place the cement park benches, statuary (go to Wal-Mart garden center - or a nursery). Look for busts, cherubs, nymphs, etc. That will give you that Mount olympus look. Up and down the tables - I would run grape vines, clusters of grapes, ivy coming out of woven baskets (or again "stone" basins from the plant place) You can get some fairly decent fake stone pots at Dollar General - they are terra cotta colored foam (you could spray paint them or leave them that color. They have Greek key designs on the outside.
If you don't want that much expense - got for the same look with giant sheets of cardboard cut and painted to look like Greek columns, Greek vases and statues of the gods.
You must also serve some Ambrosia of the Gods (fruit salad) to infer immortality on everyone who eats it. LOL
