Thinking way to hard... Whose the party for, your daughter or the grown ups.
Hawaiian theme goes big.
dont make a big thing and go in thr hole she is 1 damn it, is this for u or her? she wont remember a thing
Plan a party that YOU want, because frankly a 1-year old kid is NOT going to know the difference nor remember it.

Kids don't typically start to appreciate parties and themes till they're about 3 or 4, when they start finding things that REALLY interest them (like Tela-Tubbies, or Power Rangers, or whatever).

So have a fun time, but don't stress it with regard to a theme...you'll be the only one who really cares. Believe me.
I agree. If you want to make a good theme, try Tellie Tubbies or The Wiggles. A luau is a good idea, but at one year old, I don't think your daughter will really be able to appreciate it. You want to make sure she will enjoy it too. Good luck!
well what does she want...or like? go off of that. or do an animal theme. kids love animals.
Wow, big party for such a young child. I think when they are that age the party is more for the adults anyway.
Go to a party store and look for Hawaiian stuff. You can get all sorts of cute stuff see if they have Lilo & stich stuff. You could do an Elvis Blue hawaii theme
Get pineapples & coconuts at the market make virgin Pina coloda's make a ham put pineapple rings on it. Take a grass skirt and trim it for your daughter. Look for Hawiian music. Like one post said she won't remember the party so just have fun.
keep it simple but i would go with a barbie theme and make her the princess barbie
A luau sounds awesome! It's sophisticated enough for the adults, but yet any little ones attending will also have a blast!

I have my own children's party business and one of my themes is "Under the Sea" which converts just as easily to a luau or beach theme. Please feel free to e-mail me if you'd like some ideas or need to know where to get your party supplies!

Of course, check out Oriental Trading Company. They have a ton of luau decorations and supplies.

If you're planning the party outdoors, I would choose to do it in the early evening (unless this is your daughter's cranky time--then certainly plan something earlier in the day). Light up your yard with plenty of lanterns and white Christmas lights, tiki torches (use the tall ones and keep them away from any children's play areas, of course!), etc.

Cover your tables in brightly colored tablecloths and/or rafia table skirts. Party supply stores usually have plastic shell shaped serving dishes. I also noticed that Target has some nice luau-themed dishes out right now. Scatter fresh pineapples and coconuts on the tables, along with small shells.

Hang fishnets in a corner and fill full of clear balloons. For a fun end-of party game, you can put a small toy, candy, or sticker in each balloon, then have a "balloon drop".

Play limbo, have a hula hoop contest, and of course hand out lots of bubbles!

Serve fruit kabobs, pails full of goldfish crackers and/or oyster crackers, and how about a pail of "sand dessert"??? You can make this easily using vanilla wafers or graham cracker crumbs and vanilla pudding. Serve it in a pail with a shovel! Make a big bowl of sparkling blue punch and float sherbet "flowers" in it!

Hand out leis and sunglasses!

If you have room for a large pool (or have your own pool!) encourage your guests to bring swimswuits.

Again, please e-mail me for more suggestions. I have a million!
I wouldn't get too crazy with a party for a 1 year old. Why not save that $ and have a big party that she'll remember like her 5th bday. You'll then have a better idea of what theme to go with.
It is so smart of you to plan a party that everyone can enjoy, not just the 1 year old birthday girl. How many BORING parties have I sat through because more thought was put into what the 1 toddler wanted than the 20 other adults in attendance would enjoy? Babies that age will have fun in a crowd no matter what. The luau is a great idea! Buy a big pork loin (7 pounds or so) and bake it in pineapple juice. Serve with lots of polynesian fixins-even some hot pineapple on the grill? Don't forget your grass skirts and leis!
In Hawaii we do makes large luaus for a child turning one. It is an important birthday for your child and you should go all out if your able to. The theme is easy enough and this is a great time of the year to have a luau. You should list in your invites its a Luau and possible mention for your guests to wear Hawaiian attire, you would be surprised how many people actually have an aloha print dress or an aloha shirt. Do the tropical looking plates etc.....and most party places have alot of Hawaiian type decor for rent. Either way I hope you have a great time celebrating your little ones birthday.
Your daughter is turning ONE. Why are you doing a big theme party? She doesn't care, doesn't know what a luau is, and only cares about sticking her hands inside her birthday cake. Constant giant birthday parties for children are ridiculous, frivolous and ostentatious.
What kind of party did she ask for? Has she expressed an interest in Hawaian themes? Hawaian foods? Hawaii?

Who exactly are you having this party for? I can almost guarantee your daughter will sleep through most of it. When she is awake, she will not be happy with a crowd of people disrupting her day. The question you really need to be asking is, "who really cares that my daughter is turning one?" I don't mean to be cruel but until your little girl is actually telling you what she would like her party to be like, she will not be ready for a big theme party. Or a party of any type. Have the grandparents over for dinner put a candle in a cupcake for the baby and get a separate cake for the grown-ups. Keep it simple! Loving aunts and uncles and special friends won't love her any less if they don't spend a couple birthdays with her.

Bank the money you didn't spend on the theme party and give your daughter an education when she is ready.
I agree whole heartedly with many of the previous posters. Your daughter will not remember such an occasion. As long as she has visual stimulation and love, she will be happy. A cake, some family and other young children is all you need. Some balloons, and a few gifts. Anything else is questionable. Someday she'll look at those pictures and the simple sweetness of the party I just described will make a much better memory (since she will have no memory of this party) than photos of the luau you threw to impress (even if you are not aware of this) the other parents. Have a low key, family based 1st birthday for her, and then get a babysitter and plan the luau for the adults! You deserve it and it will be much better for everyone involved (including your daughter). Wait until she is six or seven to throw a huge themed party, when she can appreciate it and will probably beg for it. Save up the money now so you can rent an elephant or something then. Better yet....start a college fund with the money...she will surely appreciate this when she is 18 and struggling with money. Check the news...college is costing more and more each year.
lotsa gifts, must be at a really cool amusement park with alot of people and try to get someone dressed as a puppy,Barny or someone like that. a big cake with alot of flavored juices, alot of hats, decorations fun and get nice cloths :) really nice cloths, but something also comfy. amazing invitations... some music, take alot of photos... good luck ;) BLESS!! and don't forget! MUST BE AN UNFORGETTABLE DAY!!! :D
Having a Luau for a one year old sounds like it's more for the parents than the kids, who it's really for!

How bout a "Care Bears Theme" or "Teletubbies" instead of a Luau! There are so many kiddie themes these days, you shouldn't have any trouble finding something!
