yo-yos, maybe some cupcakes with each child's name on it so they do not feel left out...or you can take a picture of each child and put it in a little homemade frame for them..you can premake the frames before the party, and take poloroids of each child as they arrive, and put it in the frames while they are there still there to take home..each child would feel like attention was paid to each of them and not just the birthday child..you can also make paper hats for each child...
Go to the dollar store and buy the packs of army guys, squirt guns, and other silly stuff. Kids don't need expensive things- they need fun things.
I was always a fan of those crazy candies that look like monsters or light up or are super sour or whatever.
When is the party? After Easter? I recommend picking up silly Easter trinkets on clearance after Easter. Put them in a party bag from your local dollar store. Just look for sales. Get some cheap candy and put that in the bags as well. There are so many ways to save.

DOLLARAMA - they havethem in canada / usa I know for sure - its AMAZING what you can get for a dollar here toys , dvd's, cd's, party stuff , grab bags crafts, & MORE if thers none near you check out local clearnce stores etc ,....
dip cake cone ice cream cone in white and dark chocolate morsels melted then roll in sprinkled candy,when dry fill with candies wrap in clear plastic wrap and tie a ribbon around them i saw it on the food net work semi homemade but i couldnt find it cause noting would come up it might come up later hope u find it to see

NOW all 8 yr olds like candy or popcorn.. If you got them popcorn then the candy should be chocolate.... (tastes so good together)....
They could spend a lot of time popping it themselves... lol = might be memorable for them also

my son turn 8 march and we did pirates cost me less then £15... this was for hats, party bags, plates,napkins, cups and toys to put in.
then i planned a treasure hunt in my local parks with maps and each group won a prize,..... it was good fun...
they also have a great choice of birthday cakes...
they also had football, princesses, big smile faces, they did have Disney but this was slightly more expensive.
