Ive used sheer curtains that I bought at Ikea. they were silver and purple. abotu 5" wide and 14" long, I just double them up. and for 3.99 a pair, you could even cut them up. (I mean shorten them) a square sheet will look fine on a round table.
If you dotn have an Ikea. Check out a fabric store, they have great stuff and good prices. and you can cut it yourself, nto sure how thrifty you want to be
You could try ebay - you never know and you can usually get anything and everything on there...

A ware house if you know any one that has a card you could borrow if not try cheap shops like pound land stores you minght not get exactly what you want but they are cheap i got some really nice plain white with a gold trim and there was 3 in the packet a week ago
Don't know where you're from but in this area we have a place called Taylor Rental that rents for a very reasonable fee. Lok in the yellow pages for a party rental supplier.
WalMart or Dollar Store
This might sound silly, but have you tried asking the 'venue' holder? the place where you're having the ball probably has them, plus napery, glasses, cups, saucers, plates, cutlery...
Try Sam"s Club or Costco's
www nisbets.com. A site for professional caterers that sells to Joe Public as well, in the UK. You'll find disposable napery, flatware etc at very cheap prices.
I don't work for them, but as a trained Chef I use their stuff and it is all very good, and very cheap. Send for a catalogue, now!
