Answer:
First and foremost, if it is outside, please use SUNSCREEN! This should be first on your list and it should be enough for your little one's guests.

I think you should have a little cooler party. A cooler party is one where you literally cool yourself down via spraying water on yourself, or cool drinks. Trust me, 5 year olds love having water sprayed on them. This can be done by having a kiddie pool, water guns, or simply turning the sprinkler on. Remember, if they are outside, let them where anti-skid slippers. Ask the children's parents to pack their towels for them.

As with any host of a party with little ones, you want easy food preparations and cleaning. I don't know what 'go Diego go' is, but I assume that it is a Hispanic themed party. Try having, aside from your regular cake of course, finger foods such as quesadillas, cheesy tortillas, and nachos. Instead of traditional Coca Cola, have lemonade. Soda can make a 5 year old quite hyperactive, so you can imagine a handful of them! Stay away from foods that have alot of sugar.

Have a pinata filled with small toys that can't be easily swallowed, instead of candy. Have activities such as balloon fights and balloon toss. Have a treasure hunt.

Most importantly, let your 5 year old input his idas into the preparations. After all, it is HIS party!
have a sprinkler party to go with your Go Diego theme..that way they don't get to hot..and give them bubbles to play with while they are running around playing in the water..and get a pinata so they can have a game to go with Diego theme also.
give the kids expired green cards and you dress as a INS agent and chase them around the yard
Give the children a set a clues to follow. Give them the first clue and it will lead to the next one, and so on. At the end have it lead to a stuffed baby jaguar stuck up in a tree or somewhere and the last clue could be how to get it down (I suggest having a thread or fishing line taped with scotch tape down the trunk of the tree so they won't see it until they are looking for it and they have it tied to baby jaguar so they can pull him down). If your little party goers can't read yet use photos of the next place the clue will be hid. My mom used to do hunts for us and we loved it so much!
Oh, sounds like fun! :) Happy Birthday lil guy! Dollar General Stores carry a slip-n-slide featuring Diego..I bought it for my son's birthday party (July 8th). I bought it last week for $10! :) You should also check out Target right now, they have Diego and Dora items as their "DOT" specials for only $1..they have notebooks, journals, sticky notes, pencils, pens, ect., these would make PERFECT party gifts for the guests. Also you can check out Party City's selection of Diego decorations, they have plates, cups, hats, and other fun ideas for the kids with that theme in mind. Have a wonderful party!
