Answers:
First... have your shoes off.
Second... put your shoes, a pair or two in a decorative basket by the door.
Third... have a welcome mat... this usally encourages shoe removal
Fourth... when they come in offer to take their coats and say casually "you can just put your shoes in the shoe basket"
Fifth... make sure the shoe basket is cute...
Sixth... make sure there are other shoes in the basket, people are creatures of habit and usually follow suit when they see a basket with shoes and your bare feet they will follow as a common curtousy

Good luck with the par-tay!

Other Answers:
The mere fact that you have a party at home is like an open statement that everybody can do anything in the house. You can never tell them not to walk on your carpet.

Remove the carpet or don't have a party.

Or have a japanese theme for your party, that way they will all come in slippers and ask them to leave the slippers outside.

Make a sign & put it on your door - just politely word it so that the message comes across: no shoes on the carpet.

If they can't respect your simple wish, kick 'em out!

Get a plastic runner at the home center, and put it over your carpet. Leave a few of your own slippers n shoes at the door and when ever sum1 comes over, if ignorant, point to the shoes down below.they should get the hint.

or remove the carpet before the party...if its a wild party

Make sure you greet them at the front door...and after saying hello, ask them if they wouldn't mind removing their shoes. Tell them that you love japan style,
so you will make Asian party without shoes.

I love all the different answers and ideas! After reading your question over again, I think you have bigger issues than simply people walking on your carpet. You obviously like people, have friends, want to be with them. So put your guard down and invite them to your home. Picture this, all the shoes are off (sigh of relief), your guests are mingling around with their drinks in hand and someone accidently spills their drink on the floor!!! Did you plan for this? Water rings on the tables? Stained table cloth? People walking on your carpet is the least of your problems. Calm down, take a breath, enjoy your party and your guests. After the party call Stanley Steemer!
Just thought of another idea. how about an outdoor party?

This is actually becoming quite common here on the West Coast, maybe because of the asian influence on our culture. It's more comfortable, and especially when people have beautiful homes with a custom hardwood floor or expensive new carpets, it's just good manners to honor the homeowner's wishes. I frequently see a small tasteful sign at the door... engraved brass or carved wood... asking people to leave their shoes at the door.

Of course, if you do this, you need to accomodate the guest, so there should be comfortable shoe racks or storage compartments at the door so they have a place to neatly leave their shoes. One hostess I know even kept a basket full of warm, clean socks underneath a tasteful sign at her front door so that guests could leave their shoes and put on a pair of socks to wear inside. It made visiting her an extra fun treat, because most guests appreciated the effort she made to keep her home clean, and knew that time spent there would be relaxed and cozy.
