I have sent out several invites to some of my closest friends and only 2 out of 10 have answered. The party is Saturaday and I don't want to buy too much and no one shows up!!!

Yeah, another pet peeve of mine. Call them tonight or in the morning-some probably haven't gotten to their mail or mailboxes. Just call, "re-invite" them, and say you probably thought they were coming but could they please commit to the day/time. The older the group, the better they should be at R.S.V.P.'ing-I also found out that some folks don't know what "R.S.V.P." means!

Unfortunately, yes, you should call them. Otherwise, if they show up and you don't have enough everyone is uncomfortable, or you have way too much food. Just call them, and don't swweat it. The goal is to have fun, right? Yes so you can make plans around your firm numbers. Your call will make your friends feel bad and make them realise how inconsiderate they have been - without you even eluding to it.
If you invited your closest friends, they are probably planning on attending and don't feel its necessary to RSVP. A quick phone call or email will serve as a reminder to them and you'll be able to plan your menu accordingly.
yes. you need to know how many people are coming so you have enought food etc. so as much as it sucks you should call them and confirm if they are attending.
