Answers:
A wood cutting board is more likely to splinter and can more easily absorb/store germs from the food you cut on it. A plastic one is easier to clean thoroughly. In either case, though, you should use a separate ones for meats and anything else. Also, it's a good idea to clean (especially a wood one) with a solution of bleach water.

Other Answers:
I normally use a glass board for cutting non veg and only plastic for cutting veg as I find that crumbs do get into the wooden cracks.

I use wood. Don't trust plastic. It doesn't matter as long as you have one for raw food and another one for fruits/veggies. Plastic ones you can put in the dishwasher -- wood you should wash by hand.

I use a wooden board for everything and have done so for 40 years. Glass ones will dull your knives and plastic ones are more difficult to clean. I usually chop any veggies before cutting any raw meat, but if I've forgotten something, I just wash it well with hot soapy water, rinse and dry. NEVER clean a wooden board with bleach as it will destroy the board and tends to hold the smell and taste of bleach for a couple of days.

Been there, done that.

Plastic cutting boards are better because they are not porous. Wooden cutting boards are no longer accepted in the restaurant industry because bacteria can live in the pores. Wood holds germ. Even some if you use bleach but then your food tastes wierd after the bleaching. I have heard that plastic is ok cos its not porous like wood. The best one to use is glass. You can bleach those to kill any germs so you don't have to have a board for raw meats and then another one for veggies.

Plastic is good for poultry b/c you can wash it better than wood and put it in the dishwasher. I like wood though.
