I am going to be training at a local bar/nightclub to become a bartender. I have no experience or vast knowledge on the subject; however, I am excited because I know a lot of the people and it is a fun place to be. Just wondering if anyone had any advice on remembering/learning drink recipes, advice on bartending in general, attire (especially footwear), or any information that could be helpful. I am nervous however I know it is something I will enjoy.

**serious responces only thank you!!

Answers:
I have been a bartender for over 20 years and did not know a thing about tending bar. It a lot of fun but hard work. The key to a good bartender is have patience, be nice, smile and have fun. It is ok if you do not know the names of drinks, most of them are self explanitory.. I would say, to wear something on your feet that are real comfortable, bartending is hard on the feet and back. Right now martini's are real popular, just get the correct measuremnts and you will do fine. I am going to say since you are going to work in a "night club" they probably do not let you "free pour" so that even makes your job easier.

You will do fine, drinks are actually easier to remeber than a persons name... that is what I have found. so go get em girl you will do fine.

Practice, practice practice. It is a fun experience and you will be fine. Just remember when you get the job you are in control and don't let crazy drunks push you around ;-) Good Luck!!!

well as far as foot wear goes, something comfortable! style probably isnt so important since they wont be seeing your shoes.
as far as learning recipies and drinks , you can look online , or get books, that show you step by step how to mix them sorrectly , and with what ... when you are there you will do fine :D
people work well under pressure, and if there all drunk it should be a breeze.

You can remember the drinks easy by saying them into a recorder from a list, with the ingredients, then repeat it by saying it out loud.

Foot wear should be a closed toe shoe, which is black or suits the bar uniform. comfort is key here.

Get a book on learning body language by David Lewis, it will teach you how to read people better and make the most of the job, dealing with people and getting what you want out of the experience. Bartending is hard work - so be prepared. There is a little black book sold at any Major bookstore - Bartenders Bible - once you get the hang of it you can create your own drinks.

Good Luck! I taught my wife how to tend bar without her knowing nothing.
The first thing is pick up a bartenders book with the receipts in it. study the book then have someone ask you the drink. When you know at least 25 to 50 drinks you will be there. Be sure that the most popular drinks are in the book. Then all you have to remember is a lot of the drinks they tell you what is in it. Like gin and tonic, whiskey and 7up, rum and coke. and so fourth. She was able to get a job and step behind the bar and do the job. There will be some that you will not know. Just ask the person if they know what is in it and then you can make it. to this day she is still tending bar. That has been 15 yrs now. She had no formal training what so ever. She steped behind the bar and started work. You have to have confidence in yourself. On foot wear, wear shoes that are easy on your feet. Talk to your customers and be friendly. You should be OK
