I am having a cocktail party in July and need to know what to. I know you don't just sit around and look at everyone. Any suggestions?

Answers:
drinks and finger foods

Other Answers:
Try going to one and checking it out.
Have wine and cocktails, cheese, crackers, fruit and such. Play music and mingle...pretty much it
Mingle, Mingle, Mingle
Comment about the food.
Ask what others are drinking
Besides drinks, food and music, play a game. Something simple, charades for example. Have fun
if you are having the party, you better be working it! As the host, you CAN'T just sit around! Have treats and drinks and music!
drink ****
Drink and you'll relax the rest will come after you are relaxed. Now if you don't drink and you are shy, just mingle the best you can and stay close to the person that invited you!
Give your party a theme. My family and friends like Texas Hold'em. Yours may like a 4th of July Party with fireworks. Toga parties can get wild at times, I know, I've been to a few. Be kind and offer a few non alcoholic drinks. The last party I held, my brother spent most of the night hanging around my toilet. Wine and Cheese parties are very social.
Drink Heavily
Well that's pretty much what happens. Sip wine, eat appetizers, smile and be friendly, dress nice, and try not to be the one jerk who has too much to drink and ruins the party.
mix and mingle. Your job as host will be to make sure people meet each other and keep conversations going. Make your night easier by assigning someone as DJ.
Basically it's like what everyone says..you just drink & mingle. Music is definitely a key ingredient to having a great party though, so pick your cd selection ahead of time. If possible, use a stereo that plays 3 cds in a row. This way, even if no one is talking, there is still "life" to the party.

Also, you can do a theme party like someone said, but rather than activity, focus on the drinks. For example, we have martini parties, where we ask people to bring ingredients for their favorite martini recipe. This way it's kind of fun and everyone gets to try new drinks, which encourages mingling, etc... If you don't want to have people feel like they are BYOBing, you can suggest they only bring the 'secret ingredients' and you can supply the main vodka, sweet vermouth, gin etc... This is still a fun idea even if your party is a bit more formal.
You usually just stand around and talk, mingle, nibble on whatever food is there, and drink.

Have good, peppy music playing. Some sort of jazz that ppl recognize, Norah Jones, Mandy Patinkin, etc.
Drink cocktails and BS
please play good music, according to type of people you are inviting serve different kinds of hors de vors, and know what kinds of liquor your guests drinks so you don"t waste money. maybe talk about sports, news, something funny.

I like to get drunk and socalize
Depends on the age of the group if the ppl are 30 or under... serve Vodka slurpees... they're a crowd pleasure.

And yes... alot of fingerfood.

P.S. Am I invited too? :P
I guess you have never been to a cocktail party. Well at such a party mostly everyone is standing. You serve drinks and plenty of finger food. There should be a variety of such finger foods so people can fill themselves up. Have good soft music and most of all you will have to mingle around with every one so get plenty of topics to talk about. If you have children they could help in passing the food around. Drinks should be handled by a gent.
Catch up on current events and make a comment about a story you read in the paper. Make a suggestion that your guests try out some of the dishes you're offering or maybe a new drink.
Cheese and crackers, vegetables and dips; if you want to get fancy, put crab meat on crackers, or buy canned chicken, mix it with mayonnaise and seasonings and serve on crackers, cut up smoky links, and put toothpicks in them. So many appetizers you can do, just use your imagination. As for drinks, try pina colada and maitai's, they're both great in hot weather. You can buy the mix in your freezer section of your grocery store, and make them in the blender. Also have beer on hand for the guys. An alternative is to make a sangria with wine and fruits in a large bowl. Once again, it really depends on how formal or informal you want your party to be. Have fun!
Good drinks and appetizers will start the conversation.
With a cocktail party you really don't have to do anything to entertain your guests. Just make sure that you socialize with all of them and keep their glasses full...lol Maybe have a nice soft music in the background. I think the hard part is trying to keep the men/women from socializing separately. Make sure you do as much prep work in advance so that you can enjoy yourself as well and are not playing hostess the whole time.

A great finger food would be a nice fruit kabob. I would put it on small skewers to keep it managable while eating, with a variety of different fruits. I wouldn't put the same fruit on each kabob so people will have a choice. Of course you can put out the usual chip, nuts, dips etc. I think men like that kind of food more than fruit kabobs.

Have A Good Day and Enjoy your party.
Wait till after a couple of drinks and then invite everyone outside to go down the slip and slide you have brought!!! Everyone will get alot of laughs unless they are sticks in the mud!
It usually involves a lamp shade and some mayonnaise
