Answers:
It depends on what you're serving to eat. If you're just having wine, then have a red and a white. Something like a chardonnay and a merlot would be good.

Depends on the type of book you are discussing.. if the book is dry go for a dry wine.. if it is funny go for a fruity wine. If it is witty go for a spicy wine. etc...
I would go with white wine...
Champagne please! (-;
I would go for a bottle of Chardenay and also a bottle of either MErlot or Cabrenet. I say merlot because it can have a more mellow bite to it then cab. Just make sure it isn't out of a box and whatever you do, don't get White Zin. Try Woodbridge. It is an inexpensive wine that has a very good taste. I have gone to tons of books readings and gallery openings in my home town, Homer, Alaska, and that is the brand I have seen served most often.
I prefer champagne, but not everyone does. My favorites are Schramsberg and Mumm Napa Valley. A really good white wine is Conundrum. Franciscan Oakville Cabernet is a good red wine.

I would suggest going with a wine that is liked by most people.. Chardonnay. A lot of people do not like red wine so I would steer clear of reds and stick with white. Chardonnay is pretty universally liked. Just make sure that you buy something drinkable! No Charles Shaw! I reccomend Sonoma Cutrer or Logan, both under 20$ a bottle.
I'd go white...red tends to make a lot of people sleepy quicker than white does & if the book want any good you dont need to take that risk twice :)
i would say whatever goes with the mood of the book if you know what i mean
For a large crowd, chardonnay might be a mistake; many people are very tired of it. Right now Gruner Vetliner is a very likeable, trendy, inexpensive alternative white, and people might appreciate trying something new like that. I always recommend Sauvignon Blanc, especially Mulderbosch from South Africa as an interesting, crowd-pleasing reasonably priced, reasonably available alternative, or one from New Zealand, like Kim Crawford. I also like the idea of starting off with a champagne first... very fun... the recommendations above are all very nice, but a Spanish Cava (Freixenet) is a good inexpensive alternative. Reds are tough (people who like red usually like a specific red), but that cheap Yellow Tail Cabernet Merlot blend is somehow very popular.
white zin
