Answers:
Your party is perceived as being classier if you serve stuff with a French name.

Other Answers:
There isn't a difference..yes its just the language

Both the previous answers are more or less true; however, whilst you could serve things like buffalo wings, ribs and nachos and call them appetizers, its unlikely that anyone would ever call them hors d'ouevres (sp?).it's a formaility thing. probably its whats being served.

If you want to be truly technical about it an appetizer is any cold "snack" used to whet the appetite before dinner. An hors d'ouvres is a warm or hot "snack" that serves the same purpose. Below are two classic samples.

An appetizer would be smoked salmon mousse on toast points and an hors d'ouvres would be water chestnuts wrapped in bacon

well, a "chef d'ouvre" is a masterpiece. And "hors" means outside. So maybe an hors d'ouvre is a little masterpiece to go. People eat hors d'ouvres that are passed around by servers while standing at fancy parties. An appetizer is more of a little meal you eat at the table. Hors d'ouvres, in common usage, are served during a cocktail period, which may or may not be directly followed by a meal, while appetizers are specifically served at the start of a meal.
