i've been a waitress for many years so i know all the tricks of the trade & cannot believe the pathetic tips i receive from british customers. every other nationality is fine so they can't use the excuse 'they didn't know it should be 12,5%' it's not just me right?

Answers:
I don't think England has a culture where tipping is the norm. I know that in Australia we don't really. So maybe they don't because they forget that it is what is expected from them.
Or they could be pretending they don't know about it, because being British will let them get away with it. But I'd go for the first one myself.

Other Answers:
They dont usually tip in Europe. It is included in the meal

In Europe, waitstaff are paid a decent hourly wage. Tips are just extra. It's not like it is here where tips are all you make. It is not the custom to tip in the United Kingdom. People expect that they will be served adequately by paid waitstaff. People there think it's ridiculous to pay people extra to perform their duties.

That may seem cold, but that is the custom there. Different places have different ways of life.

Since when is it 12.5%? I start at 10% and go up based on how good the service is. And if the service really sucked, then nada.

Brits don't tip. If you were already paying a 17% value-added tax (VAT) on everyting, then you'd scrimp, as well. Imagine how long it takes to save up the money to come to America when you're taxed up the ar*e.

I worked in pubs in Britain..they don 't tip.
Why should I tip when your manager will not pay you decent wages; you already paid for the food/drink ?
My money will go to the establishment and I think you should take it up with the manager who is raking on all the profits and not giving you a $ in return.
Why should I supplement YOUR income on top of the manager's ?
Why should I automatically give you a tip anyway ?
Does anybody here receive money for free advice ?
Do you know that in Britain, tips are automatically given to the company/restaurant etc..on top of taxes ? in many of them ?
Why because British people are not suckers and do not believe in "have a great day" kind of automatic response ?

I think tips should be abolished altogether. Employers expect customers to pay for services AND pay for their employees..whilst they are counting their cash upstairs..Great idea to make other people pay for THEIR employees..

I did not mean to be nasty at all..don't take me wrong..I was in the same position but I can understand the arguments against !!

Employers are taking advantage of you..that is where your frustrations should start..not the customers !

I would have to say that is a bit racist. I have a British friend, and yes, he is clueless about how much to tip, but he always asks me because his intentions are good, he is just not used to the customs here.
