I just found this out recently!
DOES ANYONE KNOW OF HIDDEN MEAT OR FISH PRODUCTS THAT ARE NOT DISPLAYED IN THE INGREDIENTS?
source: Foods that harm and foods that heal - a very useful book.
Answers:
It's a minefield! I have learnt over the last 19 years of being a vegetarian that you have to read the ingredients list on absolutely everything just to be on the safe side.
The most annoying one for me is minestrone soup - it appears to be vegetable and pasta soup, but the traditional recipe is made with beef stock. A lot of companies make the tinned version the same way.
The only really safe bet is, when not eating at restaurants of course, is to make everything yourself from fresh ingredients!
And if you want to be extra safe, only eat at vegetarian/vegan restaurants!
But the main advice to all veggies, especially the new ones, is read the ingredients and ask lots of questions.
Yes, I knew this. If you start reading labels on everything you eat, you will eventually just know things like this. A similar situation--a lot of "seemingly vegetarian "soups, like Cheddar-broccoli, are usually made with chicken broth. Yuck!
Yes, I did. You should do more research and read food labels.
Yes...I think everyone knows that Ceaser dressing has anchovies in it. So does Worchestershire sauce.
Yes, I was aware of that.
And I would like to add that omega-3's are not always from fish oil: flax seeds are also an excellent source of omega-3's.
The one that I recently learned about was the "natural flavors" ingredient--many times, natural flavors is synonmous with meat. I know that Ragu sauces (even the ones who have no listed meat ingredients) are not vegetarian for this very reason. Gross, eh?
A-1 sauce has anchovies, hot and sour and french onion soup is made with beef broth, cheese has rennet in it (acid from calf's bellies), skittles and many other candies have gelatin that comes from hooves...
Yes, I was aware of the anchovies. I have also gone to Thai restaurants and asked if the items in the vegetarian section had fish sauce in them. Apparently these Thai people think of fish as vegetarian food. You have to ask/read labels all the time.
Check energy drinks.. Some contain
taurine from animals. As for dressing,
switch to Tahini based dressings and
you'll probably be safe.
