I think it's mainly because they're not educated on it. Chai tea is simply black tea that contains certain spices from the country of India. That flavor has only recently been introduced to Western Civilization, and your grandparents may think it is a fad drink or something. Next time they say that, ask them why they think that. Tell them what Chai tea is, and maybe they'll know not to call it that next time.
