Hi, Ive been on the acne medication Minocylcine since Mid January and it has helped my acne greatly. I did hear that it could possibly stain your teeth however. This morning I noticed that some of my teeth near the gum area were a bit dark. Anyone else have dental issues re: Minocycline?
Answers:
First of all, the only time you should be concern with tetracycline or minocycline (a tetracycline derivative) is if you are at the age where your teeth are still developing, I personally take minocylcine myself for acne but haven't had that problem since I started taking it when I was 18 years old. Usually, the recommended age that you can start going on tetracycline or tetracycline related antibiotics is around 12-14 years old since your second molars should have come in around this time already. Teeth are only affected by the antibiotics when they are in the development stage and is still mineralizing. Tetracycline or Minocycline cause staining by being incorporated into your teeth while it's mineralizing and thus alter the chemical structure of your enamel and dentin (the two main structures in your teeth).
