You shouldn't go more than 5 waking hours without eating a meal or snack. I recommend eating breakfast, lunch, a late afternoon snack (4-5pm) of apples, peanuts and/or Balance bars, dinner and a 100 calorie bedtime snack.
It's counterintuitive to most people to think that eating more often actually speeds up metobolism, until you understand how the body works. Your body is a wonderfully economic machine. If you go for long periods without fueling up, it slows the metabolism to conserve as much energy as possible. By eating more often, your body learns that new energy will be coming, so it's not as frugal with your metabolism.
