Lyons Tetley introduced the round tea bag in 1989 in the UK. At the time, Lyons Tetley was the number two brand in the UK, and like other major brands it was slowly losing its market share to the cheaper generic teas. Then, someone came up with the idea of introducing round tea bags. After Tetley started using them, sales immediately started to grow, increasing inventory turnover by 30%. 18 months later, Lyons Tetley regained brand leadership and has since maintained a 3-4% market share lead in the UK and made significant increases in its worldwide market share.
Since their introduction, the round tea bag has been copied by other companies, most notably by the Republic of Tea, who sells their teas in round tea bags stored in a round cylindrical tin, much like Pringles packs.
But according to a recent study of the kinetics of tea infusion, South African researchers found that it's the size and not the shape that is important for good tea infusion. The bigger the bag, the more room there is for the flavor to flood out of the tea leaves, regardless of the shape of the bag. Tea leaves swell when infused in water, so water doesn't flow efficiently through the leaves in the center of a swollen clump of leaves in a small bag. So a voluminous bag seems to be the answer to good tea infusion kinetics. But in the end, it's the quality of the tea in the bag and not the size or shape of the bag that decides what makes a brisk cup of tea.
I know. I sit for hours and try to figure this one out. While we're at it, why are napkins square? What's the point? Why are pizza slices triangles? I can't take this anymore......!!

If you believe the advertising hype, round and triangular tea bags allow more of the flavour into the cup that the traditional flat square tea bags.
Basically - marketing - originally to make the "new" round tea bags seem different from "old fashioned" square tea bags.
Seems they think that little things like that make people believe their product is somehow better. And no doubt some people do.
I suppose it does mean the little flakes of tea can't get stuck in a corner like they could in a square bag - but since the hot water soaks the lot regardless of the shape of the bag it probably has no effect on the quality of the tea infusion.
Its just a marketing con to get you to buy the fab 'new' product which is the same tea in round bags, ditto pyramid shape! Theoretically round bags are more wasteful /environmentally damaging than the old square ones- the sqaures used a whole sheet of material, producing the round shape means remnants left over:)xx
They can now double up as Frisbees?
Or they can now fit over your eyes better?
No idea ~ maybe cus of round cups!?
Easier and cheaper to make a round punch and die for making the teabag itself

Why not round ones they are filled with tea leaves just the same as square ones, only they fit in the bottom of the cup better, but personally I only use Yorkshire Tea bags and they are square.
