I was wondering if they pumped the smell of coffee through their air con because when you go into a starbucks the first thing to hit you is the smell. I hate the smell of coffee and its too overbearing and I cannot enter.
Other coffee shops like nero etc doesn't have any smell. Can anyone explian this? I find it hard to believe its just the smell of the coffee brewing when other coffee shops do it and don't smell

No, they do not pump the smell into the vents. There is a lot of coffee in those stores. Not just brewing, but there is espesso being pressed and whole bean coffee all over the place. So its going to smell like coffee.
The other places don't smell as much because they don't have as much coffee in their place. And its not as high of quality. The more it smells the more it tastes.

yes they do. like darrel lea, they have inside the air conditioner a small pump like an air freshner every 30 seconds or so will let out the aromer. Darrel lea uses aniseed.

I live in New Jeresy and the Nabisco plant is located about 15 miles from me. Every time you drive past it on the highway you get an overpowering smell of Lorna Doones cookies. I always suspected they did that on purpose too. Makes me want to run right into a supermarkets and start bagfeeding immediately.
I don't think they would pump smells in to air cons. Maybe Starbucks uses different coffee beans to Nero or something. The smell of strong coffee is used to suit the environment at Starbucks -thats what makes Starbucks unique compared to other Coffee chains.

I don't know about Starbucks, but I worked at a Caribou Coffee and we were always asked the same thing. The answer is not deliberately. The reason the coffee smell is overwhelming is two-fold. First, there is an air circulator INTAKE vent near the top of where the drip coffee brewer is. The drip coffee in a Caribou is brewed at the MINIMUM of once an hour per type of coffee offered (light roast, dark roast and decaf). So, the steam (and the smell) of the brewing coffee is going up to the air circulator. Seeing as each batch of coffee is about two GALLONS, that's a lot of smell circulating. Secondly, the beans themselves are stored in cabinets and closets all over the store. A smaller coffee store doesn't need to store as many bulk beans. Even in the vacuum sealed bags, these beans smell strongly. Believe me, I would go home smelling of coffee every night and it wasn't from being sprayed with coffee or having the coffee smell deliberately pumped through the air. Hope this helps!
