That is, if you drink alot of it?

Answer:
It's amazing how people keep repeating the same old wives's tales about water and sodas.

Our body is pretty efficient extracting the water from the liquids we consume. Also, based upon the research, the diuretic effect of caffeine actually decreases when people become used to the caffeine.

If you have problems like diabetes, then too much sugar will make you thirsty if left unchecked, but for healthy individuals. It's all good.

Also, the 8 glasses of water a day is a myth that was based upon a study of the sick elderly.

So pretty much if you're healthy and you drink anything when you're thirsty, then you should be good.
Yes, they can and will dehydrate you. If you are drinking soda in the hot sun, make sure you pour some water down your throat too.
yes
If you drink alot of soda, yes it will dehydrate you, the soda itself wont, but the carbonation does.
not only can they dehydrate you they can cause serious urinary tract infections
Yes very much so - The caffine .
if u drink like two cans and it is sunny. u will get dried and everything will look king of faint and black. drink two times as much as water as u did soda. some kids at a camp a couople years ago got dehydrated from tooo much soda. it was very sunny.
In those specific examples, the caffeine would be the most likely cause of dehydration. Caffeine is a diuretic, and will cause you to lose more water through excess urination. Sugar may also cause dehydration, due to the requirements of water for breaking down of sucrose units into glucose units for future energy use.

The carbonation part only creates H2CO3, which is quite a mild acid. This may dehydrate you, but the caffeine and the sugar content would be the major cause of dehydration.
It wouldn't be due to the carbonation, but all the sodium they contain.
The carbonation is not what would dehydrate you. it's the large amount of both sodium and sugar that is leaving your thirst unquenched, so you just keep drinking more. Diet sodas even generally have alot of sodium. Drink some good old water a few times a day!
Here's the deal: "Dark" sodas, such as Pepsi, Coke, etc., deplete the body's magnesium levels if you drink a lot of these types of beverages. Depleted magnesium levels raises a person's blood pressure levels. It isn't dehydration, per se, but enough of these drinks can have negative effects. Also, Pepsi and Coke have plenty of sugar and sodium, so it only stands to reason that all that sugar and sodium will cause you to be a bit bloated and thirsty. This is according to a book I read awhile ago, and I myself don't have any concrete facts to back the magnesium issue, other than the book.
Yes, drinking any drink with caffeine in it causes dehydration. Water is the best drink for your body - especially on hot days.
yes.all of the sugar and preservatives can dehydrate you. probably not to a deathly level until you are drinking them at a ridiculous level..but, they are not a good way TO hydrate you.
yes. the caffeine content causes diuresis (where you lose fluid through urinating).
No it doesn't. That's an old wive's tale. Your body is going to use the water in the soda. Too many sodas is like anything else...fattening.
