Answer:
I usually take a tea ball & stuff it with mulling spices, such as cinnamon, cardomom,clove, ginger dried orange or lemon rind. They sell mulling spice mix alot in grocery stores around this time of year, or you could find a good co-op healthfood store or herbal shop that sells the spices in chunk form instead of ground into powder like the spices in most grocery stores & make your own mulling mix...this can also be use for mulling wine, be carefull because you can overspice the cider or wine or even beer (called wassail)... I simmer it on the stove untill it is just steaming & a bit frothy. Remove the mulling spices & keep it warm in crock pot...
Usually cinnamon sticks are added, or cloves. My friend heats it with an orange studded with cloves. My other girl friend heats it with a handful of cloves and cinnamon sticks thrown in. Just simmer it on the stove, you don't have to boil it or anything. You can actually put it in a crock pot on low with the lid on, and serve it out of that so that it stays warm. You can add rum to it too if you want it alcoholic.
I put red hots (candy) in a crock pot with apple cider. Very easy and delicious.
cinnamon is good and some people add liquor, like apple shcnapps. Nice and toasty treat in the cold winter months so you won't freeze your titties or testicles off.
