Supply and demand permits them to charge the prices they do because people will pay them. Theoretically, If no one would pay Starbucks' prices, eventually they would have to lower them or go out of business. However, Starbucks would likely just shut down an operation that wouldn't perform at its typical prices to protect the brand image.

Sometimes things seem really expensive when you just can't afford to buy them. Try nescafe... you can buy it in the grocery and it comes in all different flavors and its the next best thing to Starbucks... well at least I seem to think so.

It's an internationally reconised brand and because of that the prices are way higher than the local cafes. And to some people who are brand conscious... they would buy starbucks just to proof to people that they have the money to buy it..
