ive heard a spoon in the gob does the trick.yay?
Answer:
light a candle near where you are cutting the onion. It will burn off some of the sulfur.
peel them under running water
stop pealing them
yes it does work
If you run the onion under cold water once it has been peeled that helps, not a total cure but defiantly a help.
cut the onions under running water. or in a bowl of cool water.
Put on Goggles or protective glasses that always works for me
Peeling under water is meant to help! never tried it though but then again i never cook my boyfriend does and he cries like made when doing onions!
goggles!
No..nothing works,I Should know, I've been a Chef for long enough and I'm always looking for a cure lol.
You just have to put up with it I'm afraid..
Suck on something, a cooking show i watched recommended sucking on a spoon...I'd say suck on something a little more tasty like a sweet or something.
peel under the cold water tap. does the trick for me.
Don't look at the onion when peeling or chopping it. That way the juice won't splash into your eyes.
Peel them by a lit candle..
chew gum while cuttin it.
it always works for mee!
a) peel off skin or b) leave on and peel off once very cold.
Place onion in freezer for 10-15 minutes or so... before cutting. You will not cry as once cold, they lose their kryptonite powers.
lol well. i have been seen on occasion wearing swimming goggles... not so attractive .. however how about chopping under water, someone told me that's the best way but never tried. i think i will stick to the goggles.
Have some one else peel them or try peeling them w/ sun glass' on.
before you peel them... put them in the freezer for about a half hour... I used to work at a restaurant... we did that... and it helped. you could smell it but I didnt shed a tear.
do it in the sunk, underwater.
snorkel and wet suit with swiming goggles.
Store your onions in the fridge, then they won't make you cry when you cut them: they can't make so many fumes. And your onions keep longer!
When I was watching "Like Water For Chocolate" I noticed that they put a slice of onion on top of the head to keep from crying- I have no idea if this works- I rather doubt it- but it's interesting.
Mrs Eyre has a good point about sharp knives- I keep mine razor sharp anyway- (you will know a worker by his tools) but the smoother the cut the fewer cells you will tear open, and the less liquid you will free. If you cut with a serrated knife I expect you will make more fumes than with a smooth-edged knife because of the ragged cut you make.
When cutting keep the root (bottom of onion) away from u.it works
suck a teaspoon (metal) it works, but watch your fillings!
I keep mine in the fridge, when I chop them I never cry..try that.
Soak them in water. Submerge them in water for as long as you can. The onion will lose potency the longer it is soaked. I recommend changing the water at least once and soaking them overnight (in a fridge) if you can. I do this for onions I use in salads. It relieves the burn and saves the sweet. Good luck!!
I once worked in a kitchen and had to peel a 56lb bag of onions - about halfway through I got used to it and haven't suffered since.
Any metal utensil in your mouth - it apparently has some kind of chemical reaction to counteract the production of tears. Have fun!
Some tricks that I have personally tried and find helpful are:
1) putting the onion in the fridge (or briefly in the freezer-but not too long you don't want the taste of the onion to be affected)so it is cold when you start working with it.
2) lighting a candle nearby.
The candle can "burn up" the sulfur the onion gives off that make your eyes water.
3) Use a well sharpened knife.
Hi, I always keep my onions in the fridge, they don't make my eyes water when I cut them now.
