Answer:
I'm a server as well as a customer--Here are a few tips to ensure great service:

Remember that you are the first and the last person a customer will see--smile, be polite, professional, and sincere in your greetings and farewells.

Know several greetings and farewells to avoid monotony. If I heard you say "Hi, how are you" to the four people in front of me, it would tell me that you're simply going through the motions.

Seat in rotation according to server sections. A restaurant can be a well-oiled machine or a 1983 Buick with the car door falling off. You, in large part, decide which one it will be. Overseating a server can hinder prompt service which will hurt business in the long run.

When there's a customer around waiting for a table, pay attention to them, not your fellow workers, unless, of course there is business to attend to. As a customer, I don't want to hear how Buffy and Muffy and Fluffy went to the mall and got their hair did for the prom. I want to eat, and since I'm paying, pay attention to me.

If there is a wait, get all the details for the table ahead of time to avoid seating issues. If there is a child, ask if a booster seat or high chair is needed. An eldrely couple would much prefer a table closer to the door so they don't have to walk as far.

Know your menu. I know that restaurants don't put much emphasis on this, but as a host, it is usually your responsibility to not only point out specials and promotional drinks, but know what they're all about as well.

Good Luck!
smile always
be prompt
never sit people on dirty tables
make eye contact
suggest some of the specialties of the house
Pay attention to all the guests, even after they are sat. Look`up and make yourself visually accessable to the guests.Don't be afraid to refill a beverage or bring more bread etc. When you seat guests and their server is busy taking an order for a large party don't just sit them and hope. say something like "Joe, your server, is taking an order for a larger party however I can get you started with some soft drinks or water, as well as some rolls & butter" Know the menu and and answer questions you know but defer to servers the things you don't know. Always greet with a big smile and thank every guest as they leave.
