Liquorice roots-and yes you can still get them in certain sweet and chemist shops. I used to like them-still do. I bought some from my chemist last year. They stick in your teeth though.

They were called liquorish sticks.

We just called them liquorice sticks, and I can still get them in the UK
whips? if so they are still sold at morrisons, BP service stations etc. or if you mean the actual licorice flavoured sticks you just chewed and sucked they are called twigs....and yes they are still available in places like...Blists Hill, Shropshire a reproduction sweet shop and St. Albans in a corner sweet store there....and well..loads of places.....just phone around! Try also National Trust shops.....and I tracked it down to a healthfood store you can buy it online!!!

liquorice sticks!...you can still get them from the shops that sell sweets in the jars...you know like...kola cubes....sweet peanuts.....that kinda thing...
When I was little you could buy them from any chemists shop and here in the North East of England they were known as cuddy roots

those sticks are called liquorice root you used to be able to get them in the chemists but i think its banned now in uk anyway.

they are actually a plant. kids loved them duing the wars when food was rationed because you just had to get one off a tree. and they lasted for ages!

You can still get them: I bought some for my kids nearly thirty years ago but they were not impressed with them. They realised then my tales of a hard childhood might have had some substance if that was what we regarded as sweets. As for the idea of going to all the trouble of adding garlic or an Oxo cube to plain crisps, because there were no other flavours then...

Licquorice root - Culpeper the Herbalist used to sell them - I don't think they taste much like licquorice though, but they're probably reeeeeally good for you!
