Butter creates a sort of moisture proof barrier, when adding things like mustard and mayonnaise to your sandwich so that it doesn't get soggy. Ever pack a lunch for school and end up with a nasty soggy sandwich?

My mom made us do that when we would go on picnics. She was afraid that the mayonaise would go bad & we would get salmonella. It's a good way to get extra fat & have your sandwich not be dry.

HAHA some people put it to boost up flavor. Some for the texture. Some to soften up bread.... I know this because im a waitress

My parents put butter on tomato sandwiches which is yukky to me, but I think it might come from back when there wasn't mayo and stuff and people had butter to put on bread, they just used it for sandwiches, too. Just a guess.

keeps it moist, just like mayo or another condiment.

It used to gross me out-and it still does. the only person i knew who did that were grandparents.. i thought it was just a midwestern thing-apparently not!

Back in the day bread was much harder, so it wasn't easy or real pleasant to eat a 'dry' sandwich. And there wasn't mayo in the stores yet. So... butter it was. When they started to make bread out of more processed stuff to soften it up, the came up with oleo. Which has also changed and we now call that margerine.

My G-ma use to serve us jello with fruit cup in it on a bed of lettuce and a dollop of mayo. EEeeewww.

I asked my b/f grandmother about this a while back and she said it was because they didn't have mayo or it was that butter was cheaper than mayo .. I don't remember but there may be some truth in it?? Personally I think its gross
