I think they are both yucky...so there are NO differences to me.

Other Answers:
They are one and the same.

In the states, they are the same.

In reality yams are a different type of tuber. I think that they are in africa or something.

I'm with dk on this one They are Not the same. A Yam is a legume like a peanut, a sweet potato is a tuber like a potato which is a storage form of energy for the plant.

Yams are Sweet potatoes its just the way their made. Yams tend to be sweeter.

Yams and sweet potatoes aren't the same. There are different types of yams actually. Some yams have a very thick skin, dark brown in color. And they are not sweet at all. Havn't seen those here in the US though. These yams actually taste great if prepared well.The ones v get here are not so good.

You can charge more at a restaurant for a Yam than you can for a sweet potato. A sweet potoato is orange and a yam is yellowish-white and a much sweeter potato than a sweet potoato!

There is no difference except some people call yams, sweet potatoes and sweet potatoes, yams...
Source(s):
The Root itself....

They are NOT the same.

Yams are white inside and very, very large. They're not as commonly found in the US but are commonly used as a starch in Africa. Normally harvested when they are between 2 and 6 pounds, they can actually grow to 150 pounds though they're not edible at that weight.

A sweet potato is the orange potato we are used to seeing and although erroneously called yams by people and the various companies that process them...if it's an orange potato, it is a sweet potato and nothing else.
