With all the holiday shopping, my budget is a little tight this month. Plus the roommate keeps eating all my food! Any good ideas?

Answers:
If you want healthy food, brown rice or corn & beans is a good way to go. Less than $5 should last you a good couple of weeks. Fresh veggies are actually cheaper than canned or frozen, but you have to get just enough for a couple of days and keep going back.

Ramen, boxed mac&cheese and the like provide lots of calories, but precious little protein or other nutrition. They do provide salt fat - lots and lots of both. Still, they're fast and filling.

Eggs are pure protein, and one jumbo egg is only about 10 cents or so.

Hopefully, you have some spices and such to liven this menu up a little. If not, ethnic grocery stores are a good source for cheap spices and may have other cheap foods. If you're a little adventurous.

This is a good article for Australians.

You could buy the ingredients to make a lasgana (I love vegie ones) which you can freeze and warm as needed. You can buy fruits and vegies as needed and are good for snacks and meals themselves. You could buy individual chicken breasts (they're like 2-3 dollars) and bake them fry them or boil 'em (really good with herbed rice). Depends what you like. Fatty, fast food, foods are cheap. I try to keep away from them though because I don't work out anymore.
If you want good nutrition for cheap, a quart of 2% milk gives you all the protien you need all day for only a buck!. Plus a 1/2 gallon of Apple Juice only costs 2 bucks at any grocery store and will go far.
Also, the dollar menu at McDonalds has a ton of good cheap food. For only 3 bucks on the dollar menu you can get a double cheesburger, 2 apple pies, and a side salad.
I lived off of the dollar menu when I lived in my car last winter.
I could survive on only 5 or 6 bucks a day, eating from the dollar menu and buying a cheap loaf of bread every few days.
CORNBREAD AND PINTO BEANS!!
a friend used to buy boxes of mac and cheese. also what about ramen noodles?
One of my favorites is a super-easy tuna casserole my mom taught me to make.

Here's what you'll need:
*Rangetop stove
*(optional) oven
*colender to strain the pasta
*pot to cook the pasta in
*(optional) casserole dish
*wooden spoon or something to stir ingrediants with
*can opener
*pasta (egg noodles are suggested, but other pastas are very good also)
*at least one can of tuna (you can use as many as you want)
*at least one can of a cream soup, like cream of chicken, I wouldn't use more than two (you can use cream of mushroom, too, but since I'm not a huge mushroom fan, I tend to like chicken better)
*(optional) Parmesean cheese

Here's what you do:

1. Cook a bag of egg noodles (you can use any kind of pasta, but egg noodles seem to be pretty inexpensive and good in this recipe) and drain.
2. Drain the oil or water the tuna is packed in.
3. Mix the pasta, tuna, and cream soup together. Don't actually make the soup - pop it right in there straight out of the can. You can mix these in the pot you made the pasta in to save yourself from having to wash an extra bowl.

At this point, you've got a meal. You can eat it just like that, or with a bit of parmesean cheese (very good!), or you can put the whole thing in a casserole dish and bake in the oven at 350 for a while (try about 10 minutes at first) until the top gets a bit golden-brown. If you decide to bake it, you can put some parmesean cheese on the top before you put it in the oven.

Go ahead and make a lot. I'm not a fan of left-overs, but this stuff reheats so well that even I like it warmed up. It sticks to your ribs, too, as they say, so a little goes a long way. Did I mention that it tastes great? :) It does. :)

Hope this helps!
