Uniquely American is a bit of a stretch. As a nation of legally accepted immigrants from many cultures that retain their own ethnic preferences in food. An example could be my personal weakness for Cincinnati chili, finely ground beef in a sweet tangy sauce served as a sandwich over a hot dog topped with diced onion and shredded mild cheddar cheese. Or as a main course over spaghetti, topped with onions, red kidney beans, and again the cheddar cheese. Named after Cincinnati Ohio U.S. the “inventor” explains that after Ellis Island a visit to a park in Coney Island New York where vendors offered hot dogs with a course chili topping gave him inspiration. Adapting and old family recipe and method of preparation the chili took on flair of his homeland…Greece!
Point is American dishes can be traced back to another culture, any exception would be rare indeed.

American eating varies enormously from one region to another, as do the dietary habits and produces. Try looking at some of the recipes, and getting your own conclusions. American GASTRONOMY??!!??!!
This is a TRICK question, isn't it!! Yes, that is unfortunately something of an oxymoron: American gastronomy.
If you really want something that is uniquely American, grill up a burger or slice up some fries and fry them in a vat of oil. We're health nuts here. ;)
On a more serious note, though, "fast food" (think burgers and fries or hotdogs) are the most original type of food in America. It became really popular in the 1950s and kind of exploded out from there. Before that, it was simple home cooking and renditions of "foreign" cuisine. I'm afraid we have very little that is truly unique and interesting.
As far as desserts go, apple pie is truly an American classic. The link below will offer you a bit of guidance. It's one of my favorite desserts, and quite simple (though time-consuming) to make.
Good luck!
